The dual-marker test is one of the most preferred methods for assessing the risk of genetic disorders in the foetus. It measures two important substances in the mother’s blood: free Beta Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (β-hCG) and Pregnancy-Associated Plasma Protein-A (PAPP-A). Abnormalities in foetus can lead to chromosomal disorders, congenital irregularities, and miscarriages. Since this test is done early in pregnancy, the results can give expecting mothers enough time to make important decisions about further tests, treatments, and the overall management of their pregnancy.

Why is the Test Important?

The dual marker test in pregnancy checks if the unborn baby has a risk of developing any kind of neurological disorder such as Down’s syndrome, etc. It helps in: 

  • Detecting Trisomy 18, also known as Edward syndrome
  • Checking the risks of Trisomy 21.T in an unborn child, which causes heart conditions, mental disorders, and other health issues.

Early identification of potential chromosomal abnormalities allows families and healthcare professionals to make informed decisions related to other tests.

Test Procedure 

The dual marker test is a simple blood test done between the 9th and 13th weeks of pregnancy. The blood samples of an expecting mother are collected and checked for PAPP-A and hCG levels. The test can also be combined with an ultrasound examination or nuchal translucency (NT) scan of the baby. Generally, the test reports are generated in 3 to 5 days.

How are the Results Interpreted?

The results of the dual marker test are usually presented as a ratio or risk score, such as 1 in 1,000 or 1 in 250. A lower ratio indicates a lower risk, while a higher ratio suggests an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities. However, it is important to note that this is a screening test, not a diagnostic one. A high-risk result does not confirm a condition but indicates the need for further testing. In some cases, healthcare providers may also recommend additional screening methods, such as the quadruple test in pregnancy, for further evaluation during the second trimester. Conversely, a low-risk result does not guarantee the absence of abnormalities.

So, the dual marker test is a vital early screening tool in prenatal care. It supports informed decision-making and promotes better pregnancy management.
