Gas cutting machines are devices that cut material, generally metal, using a fuel gas in conjunction with oxygen. These devices are also known as oxy-fuel cutting machines since they employ oxygen in the cutting process. These machines are capable of cutting low carbon steel with carbon content ranging from 1/10th to 3/10th of 1%. When steel is exposed to oxygen at a high temperature, it rusts quickly and becomes burnt.

Steel must be heated to roughly 1800°F before the cut can be made.Kindling temperature is another name for this. Steel quickly interacts with oxygen at this temperature. The chemical interaction between oxygen and steel lies at the heart of gas cutting.

Heavy metal sheets up to 20 inches thick are cut with gas cutting machines, which are typically hard to cut with other forms of cutting equipment.

Gas cutting is only effective when the metal's oxidation (ignition)temperature is lower than its melting point. Because the ignition temperature of cast iron is higher than the melting temperature,oxy-fuel cutting is not suggested.
