It translates the commands of hardware components of a computer to the software so that the required action can be done. For example, if you press any key on your keyboard, then the BIOS will translate it to get the function done, which is intended.
Power-On Self-Test (POST)The BIOS is used to do POST. When you turn on your computer, BIOS checks all the parts to ensure they're ready to work. If it finds everything okay, then the system boots successfully. But if there's a problem, BIOS lets you know with messages on the screen.
BootstrappingWhen you press the power button, BIOS springs into action. It loads a small program from a chip on the motherboard. This program knows where to find your operating system like Windows or macOS and helps it start.
Hardware InitializationBIOS initializes all the hardware components – like the processor, memory, and hard drive. It makes them ready to work together in sync. It ensures that your computer can run smoothly without any glitches.
System Configuration and Setup UtilityBIOS also lets you create custom settings on your computer. It can be done by accessing the BIOS menu. In the BIOS menu, you will find many settings to customize your computer.

You can access BIOS on your computer by following these simple steps.
First, restart your computer and wait for the starting screen, which comes after the logo of the monitor's company.When the starting screen appears, you will see a function key written on the screen, which can be any function key from F1 to F12. UEFI is a new specification used to boot present-day computers. Intel, in 2017, had already announced that it would replace the traditional BIOS with UEFI as a more convenient option.
The UEFI firmware can boot an OS and other relative components from a drive of 2.2 TB or more. However, the maximum limit of UEFI is 9.4 zettabytes, which is theoretical as it is more than thrice the estimated data stored in all the storage devices on earth.
If you have the latest computer or laptop, it probably has UEFI firmware instead of traditional BIOS. But, if you access the BIOS menu of your computer, it will still refer to it as BIOS.
