What to see and do in the central hills of Sri Lanka

There is much to see and do when visiting the cool climes of the hill country, and places to visit. Here are a few not-to-be-missed places and things to do as you travel up into the hills.

Visit a tea factory: The central hills are where the tea plantations of Sri Lanka started, and one of the most interesting things to do while there is visit a tea factory. You may even be able to sip a delicious and extremely aromatic cup of Ceylon tea while there.Horton Plains: Visit the wildlife of Horton Plains and see the beautiful flora and fauna that you won’t find anywhere else. You may even be lucky enough to go near a friendly sambar deer on your way there.Mini World’s End: A place within the Knuckles Mountain range that offers spectacular views as far as your eyes can see.Take a swan boat ride on Lake Gregory: A romantic ride on a swan boat on Lake Gregory in Nuwara Eliya is a must.Victoria Park: The Nuwara Eliya Victoria Park is home to some of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful flowers and trees. You will find beautiful roses of all colours here.Hakgala Gardens: Another beautiful park on the way to Nuwara Eliya is the Hakgala Gardens, home to a large variety of flora and fauna.St Claire’s Waterfall: View one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island as you sip a delicious cup of tea.Visit old monasteries: The central hills are home to many old monasteries, some more than a century old. Here you will be able to find delicious jams, pickles and sauces made by the nuns and priests.Stay at the Grand Hotel or Queens Hotel: The Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya and the Queens Hotel in Kandy are two of the oldest hotels in Sri Lanka, well worth a visit.Visit the Temple of the tooth relic in Kandy: The temple of the tooth relic in Kandy is a sacred temple that houses the holy tooth relic of the Lord Buddha.The Esala Perahera: The perahera is a procession of beautifully adorned elephants, dancers, fire dancers, drummers and many more, who parade every year in July/August paying homage to the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha as it is carried by the royal elephant.

 

In addition to these, there is so much more you can do while in the hill capital. Getting to these locations is easy. You can always get a car hire in Sri Lanka with a driver, or take the scenic route on a train. However, you choose to travel, make sure you get the maximum possible enjoyment as you traverse the hills of Sri Lanka!
