When Should You Actually Book the HPT?

Passing the NSW Hazard Perception Test is an important step toward the practical driving test, but booking it too early may not be useful.

Your readiness matters. The HPT is designed to check how you recognise and respond to developing road situations, so preparation should involve more than learning the test format.

There are also eligibility and timing requirements to consider. Learners under 25 can take the HPT after holding their learner licence for at least 10 months. Those aged 25 or older can take it when they are ready.

After passing, the result remains valid for 15 months. That means the practical driving test needs to be completed within that period, or the HPT may need to be taken again.

For that reason, it is worth thinking about where you are in your overall driving preparation before booking.

Not sure what readiness should look like before you schedule the test? This guide covers the timing and preparation points you should know: https://onroad.com.au/Blog/How-to-Pass-the-NSW-Hazard-Perception-Test-HPT-on-Your-First-Try
