The Rann of Kutch, also known as the White Rann or the Great Rann of Kutch, is a seasonal salt marsh located in Gujarat’s Thar desert and partly in Pakistan’s Sindh province. Because the rate of evaporation of water is slower than the rate of precipitation, a vast expanse of salt crust forms. It is one of the world’s largest salt deserts. The White Rann covers nearly 7500 square kilometres of land. ‘Rann’ is derived from the word “Viraan,” which means “deserted wasteland.” It’s a visual treat to see white salt marsh for as far as the eye can see.

History of Rann of Kutch:

This region of Kutch was once a part of the Arabian Sea. Over time (millions of years), tectonic shifts occurred, causing the land to rise. The area is flooded during the monsoon season due to the Arabian Sea’s tidal surge. After the monsoon, the area dries out, leaving behind a vast featureless plain covered in salt and marsh. It is believed that Dholavira, a part of the Indus Valley civilisation, was located in the centre of these salt fields (Harappan civilisation).

Is Rann of Kutch truly a desert?

The Rann of Kutch is a salt desert, not a sand desert. There are no visible sand dunes, dust storms, or cactus plants. The entire stretch is made up of nothing but pure white salt.

How to reach Rann of Kutch?

Bhuj is the nearest city to the Rann of Kutch. Bhuj is well connected to Bombay and other Gujarat cities.

By Air: Jet Airways operates flights from Mumbai to Bhuj.

By Train: Bhuj is well connected by train from Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kolkata, Jaipur etc.

By Bus: Bhuj has bus connectivity from cities in Gujarat like Ahmedabad, Vadodara etc.

The Border Security Force is present in large numbers in the area due to its strategic location (the India-Pakistan border is only 80 kilometres from Rann of Kutch). The nearest hamlet is Dhordo, which hosts the Rann Utsav.

Do we need a permit to go to Rann of Kutch?

To visit the Rann of Kutch, you must have a permit. It is open to tourists from early morning until around 7 p.m. However, obtaining permission is straightforward, and it can be obtained at the BSF checkpoint in Bhirandiyara village on the way to Rann. You need to have:

Valid ID proof: PAN cards, driving licences, Aadhar cards, and passports are required for Indians. Foreign visitors must have a passport. It’s a good idea to bring a photocopy in case you need to submit one.

Vehicle permit: The driver needs to get his licence and car documents verified at the check post.

Entering fee: Rs.200 per person

When is the best time to visit Rann of Kutch?

The best time to visit Rann of Kutch is during the winter season, which lasts from October to February. In my opinion, the best months to visit are October and November because the landscape is unspoiled. The most popular tourist area of the desert was filthy and brown when we visited in February.

October and February: The temperature is pleasant during the day. In December and January, nighttime temperatures drop into the single digits, but this is the best time to see the White Rann in all its glory.

March to June: It’s summer, and the weather is oppressively hot and humid. Temperatures can reach 50 degrees Celsius, making the heat unbearable. One can visit during this time to see the gleaming white rann, though there are no facilities available, such as resorts, restaurants, proper toilets (there is one near the parking), and so on.

July to September: The region receives rain during the monsoon season, and the white desert is flooded with seawater. It is pointless to go at this time.

During Rann Utsav, White Rann is open on full moon nights. When the bright glow of the full moon merges with the infinite white landscape, it provides an extremely rare experience.

What is Rann Utsav?

Rann Utsav is a three-month festival hosted by Gujarat Tourism to encourage visitors to visit the Rann of Kutch. It takes place between November and February. To accommodate the guests, the Rann Utsav tent city has more than 350 tents built in the village of Dhordo. As part of the Rann Utsav, Gujarat Tourism organises a variety of activities. The Rann Utsav package includes excursions to nearby attractions.

Camel cart rides, ATV rides, paramotoring, rifle shooting, a kids’ entertainment zone, spa treatments, and cultural shows are among the activities available. Guests can also stay at other resorts that welcome visitors during this time. Many visitors prefer to stay in Bhuj and travel to White Rann from there.
