Aquafarming is an idea introduced to meet the cravings for seafood. In the past years, the population of aqua animals has increased. Aquafarming is introduced to control the population, but does it really reduce the population and helps to limit environmental issues? The answer is not yet clear; however, aquafarming is infamous and not beneficial if not done the right way. One of the basic causes is environmental degradation.

Before getting to the reasons why Aquafarming is not beneficial if not done the right way? Let’s understand some basics to get a better idea.

What is Aqua Farming?

Aquafarming,  also called pisciculture, is a practice performed by humans to include seafood in human meals. It has been practiced for many years, the modern technology of aquafarming follows the intensive agriculture practice. It focuses on maximizing the outcomes by putting less effort into getting many fishes at once.

These non-natural practices include different chemicals, pesticides and discharge waste that can cause harm to the fish and the environment. It may destroy the water at the coast or the local ecosystem. Industrial aqua farming features factory farming that is related to animals like cows, pigs or chickens. Aquafarming is a variant of aquaculture that is producing marine life. Industrialization  of fish farming includes crustacean animals, such as shrimps, mollusks, seaweed or shellfish.

What are the different types of fish that are farmed?

According to the studied report by the Fish and Agricultural Organization, the topmost fish varieties that are farmed globally include Silver Carp, Nile Tilapia, common carp  and grass carp.

What are the different types of Aquafarming?

Different types of aquacultures depend on hydrobiological features, the motive behind farming and social operation techniques. These practices are divided further into different sections. Some of them are mentioned below:

Open Cage System- It is also known as mariculture, it is a kind of aquaculture that mainly includes seawater, whether done around the sea coast or in a small pond with seawater in it. Mariculture includes mollusks, prawns, shellfish or seaweed.

Fish Farming- It is the most common type of aquaculture, which includes a reproduction of fish in freshwater or seawater, done for the consuming it as food. It is the easiest way of farming as fish do not require any special care, except proper food, water condition and temperature.

Algaculture- Algaculture involves the raising of algae. Algaes refers to microbial organisms with attributes like animals containing chloroplast, which makes them green in colour, allowing them to photosynthesize just like a plant.

Integrated Multi-Trophic Agriculture (IMTA)- It is an advanced systematic type of aquaculture in which various trophies are mixed into systems to bestow different nutrition values. This type of aquaculture is harmless, ensures less waste, is produced during the process and makes maximum products from it.

Why is Aqua Farming bad for the environment?

There are many ways in which aquafarming can affect our environment. In the last few years, aquaculture has increased to a great extent. Some of the effects are mentioned below:

Builds Nutrients-  Open water builds up nutrients for fishes as nothing can prevent a dead fish. Various uses of chemicals, organic matters, phosphorus and nitrogens are released into the environment that is toxic for it.

Antibiotics- Different drugs are used to prevent the spreading of disease, increasing growth, or preventing parasites in aqua animals. Usage of antibiotics directly enters into the natural environment of seawater, which directly impacts sea life that can resist the development of the sea.

Destruction of Natural Ecosystems- The ecosystem is the primary source for the coastal zones’ organic matters. Aquafarming is harmful for the natural ecosystem because of the continuous usage of different chemicals and drugs.

Loss of Freshwater- Freshwater is used in aquaculture to store plenty of fish in a cage. For the provision and incubators, an immense amount of energy is required to pump the water for cleaning and filtering it.

Conclusion

The information mentioned above is about aquafarming, different types of aquaculture, and the effects of aquafarming. There are positive effects of aquafarming, but aqua farming is associated with some bad impacts on the environment because of various reasons mentioned above.
