Concealed carry is a completely different ballgame than open carry or simply picking up your firearm from a table at the range. Just drawing and firing from an IWB holster is more complex than an OWB setup. One of the best ways to improve your skills is to wear one of your concealed carry Kydex holsters, head to the range, and practice a few drills to develop muscle memory for when you need it most.
Draw and Fire
This first drill is deceptively simple. You need to draw your gun from your holster for Glock 43X, clear your clothes, rotate it, present it to the target, aim, and fire. Every step in this process is key for developing and reinforcing foundational skills. Start slow and build muscle memory. Think efficiency and economy of movement. No extra motion needed. If you are already proficient with this, it’s still worth practicing regularly to continue improving your speed.
The Dot Torture Test
For this next drill, you need a target with 10 dots, each two inches in diameter, at three yards. Each dot requires five rounds. For the first dot, fire five slow rounds. The second dot is where you draw and fire five times. On dots three and four, draw and fire on dot three and transition to dot four, firing again. For dot five, draw and fire five shots with a one-handed grip. Dots six and seven are a repeat of the sequence for dots three and four but with two shots on each target. Dot eight is five shots from your weak hand. Dots nine and 10 require firing a shot at dot nine, reloading, and then firing a shot on dot 10. A single miss is a fail. It’s a complex drill, but it’s an excellent way to practice a variety of skills in quick succession.
Controlled Pairs
Finally, the controlled pairs drill involves drawing from your Glock 19 holster with light attachment molding, quickly firing two rounds, and grouping them as close together as possible, even going for a “ragged hole” of the exact same spot. You may even want to try turning the light on during the draw or using your weak hand for an added challenge. It’s also a great drill to introduce reloads to, firing twice, reloading, and firing another pair of shots.
