Collecting antique guns can be a fun pastime. Beyond gun enthusiasts, it appeals to history buffs and fans of memorabilia, general treasure hunters, and anyone looking for a solid investment opportunity. However, there are a few myths regarding gun collecting to be aware of. With some preparation and investment in high-quality gun cases, though, it’s a hobby anyone can enjoy. Keep your guns in their best shape by forgetting these three myths.

Myth: Store Your Guns in a Cool, Dry Place

Reality: They Shouldn’t Be Too Cool or Too Dry

It’s not exactly fair to call the recommendation that you store your guns in a cool, dry place a myth, per se. It depends on your definition of both cool and dry. If you consider cool and dry to be an environment kept around 70 degrees with a humidity of approximately 50%, then it’s not a myth.

However, while damp conditions and extreme temperatures can warp wood and damage metal, keeping them too dry and cool can result in damage like cracked wood. So, aim to keep your gun safe at around 70 degrees and 30 to 50% humidity to keep your antique or modern firearms in their best shape.

Myth: Once Guns Are in the Safe, They’re Safe

Reality: Go a Step Further with Gun Socks and Pouches

Having a gun safe is a must for anyone with a valuable firearm collection. However, those guns don’t automatically become safe and free from risk just because they’re in a safe. For instance, guns that aren’t properly secured can scratch and nick each other. Invest in a selection of gun socks and pouches to protect your firearms in the safe.

When guns are outside of the safe, consider a locking gun case. This type of case adds an extra layer of security and comes in handy when transporting your gun to the range or the gun show.

Myth: It’s Best to Leave Guns Alone Once You Have Them

Reality: You Should Inspect and Maintain Your Firearms Regularly

Among the most common gun myths is that once acquired, the best thing you can do is just leave your antique, vintage, or collectible guns alone in the safe. There’s a good chance you’ve heard horror stories about someone thoroughly “cleaning” a gun that removed the patina, scratched it up, or otherwise rendered it exponentially less valuable. However, the “just do nothing with the gun” option is not a good alternative either.

For example, rust is not patina. Doing nothing with a gun that has rust or a similar degenerative issue can hurt the gun’s value and condition. To be a successful gun collector, you’ll need to do a good bit of research. That means learning about your guns and how to safely take them apart and put them back together. It means learning about safe solvents, oils, waxes, and the right cleaning methods and tools. You should look into monitoring and maintaining temperature and humidity in your safe, particularly if you live in a humid region. So, be sure to inspect and maintain your guns periodically, so they stay in the best condition.
