In honor of National Adopt a Cat Month in June, let’s learn more about the cat that acts a little peculiar. You might even say they act like a dog. The first time you notice it, you tilt your head in very dog-like behavior yourself. What is that cat doing? They’re just being themselves. If you want to uncover whether the cat you adopted is more like a dog, you’re in good paws (even if they have claws).
They Love Going (And Staying) Outside
Some cats stand at the door, longing for the outside world, only to freeze after taking four steps outside. It takes more than one encounter with the outside world to grow accustomed to it. Then, there are the adopted cats that learn how to use the dog door that your other cat never seemed to grasp. This dog-like feline bolts out the door; you see them rolling in the grass, chasing squirrels, meowing at the neighbors, and basking in the sun until they hear you jostle a food storage container inside. At that point, it’s time to return to more cat-like behavior.
They Drink Out of the Dog’s Water Bowl
If your adopted cat starts drinking out of the dog’s water bowl and running over to the food bowls when they hear you move your dog food storage container, it’s dog-like behavior. Most cats love clean water as long as it doesn’t touch anywhere other than the tip of their paws and fuzzy chins. A cat that loves dog water is a different beast. They might even lie beside the bowl while they drink and get half their face covered in the semi-slobbery water. They don’t care. Those precious little angels are basically dogs.
They Play Fetch with Their Toys
You might toss their toy, and your adopted cat goes for it, scooping that little catnip mouse up in their jaws and racing back to you for another go. It’s fetch. It’s not the most common dog-like behavior in cats, even for cats that have particularly dog-like personalities. Still, it is a very clear indication that your cat is actually more like a dog. Even if the only dog-like behavior they display is fetch, it will cast everything else they do through dog-view lenses. Congrats! Your cat is now a dog that won’t listen to your commands (unless there’s something in it for them), like a French Bulldog.
They Sleep on the Dog’s Bed (And Go in the Kennel)
A dog’s bed and their travel kennel for dog safety smell distinctly of dog. They’re covered in dog fur, a bit of dirt, and maybe even some crumbs from their last well-earned treat. Cats love sleeping everywhere they shouldn’t, except where it smells like a dog. When your adopted cat takes over the dog kennel or bed, they become the alpha. They might not want to snuggle with the dog, but they certainly like the comforts of a dog's life.
So, are you a cat person or a dog person? You get the best of both worlds if you’re lucky enough to adopt a cat that acts like a dog. Those quirky cat personalities will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
