Are you getting tired of standing next to the same table and firing at the same targets? Are you looking for ways to make your range days more productive and exciting? From trying new drills to using upgraded Glock 19 accessories to improve your handgun’s performance, here are a few quick ways you can get more enjoyment out of hitting the range.
Try New Shooting Drills
Trying new shooting drills is one of the first things you can do to make your range days more productive. You can do a wide range of drills with different goals and work different shooting techniques and fundamentals. From accuracy to speed, proper trigger pull to reloading, there is a drill for everything. You can even do drills that start with a rifle and move to a handgun.
If you’re training for competition, switch things up to break the monotony of training. Try a new drill like the Phase 5 Drill, do one of your old favorite drills, or do something that doesn’t directly relate to competition training.
Shoot More Exciting Guns
Another way to have more fun at the range is to bring the guns you enjoy shooting. It could be the rifle your grandpa handed down to you, or the one with the flashy aftermarket AR 15 dust cover, mag release, and bolt release in matching colors that just look cool. Every gun offers a different shooting experience, and we all have those few guns that are just a blast to shoot.
Bring the weird gun you found at a pawn shop and see how it compares to your Glock. Bring the highly customized Glock and compare it to a standard 1911. The key is to do something different and bring out the guns you don’t often shoot.
Get Tactical
Create a tactical course for yourself if you are at an outdoor range. Bring a shooting buddy who can decide which random thing you will do at each target, when to switch to your handgun, or which short drill to do as you move along. They can tell you when to switch mags, when to simulate a failure to fire, or anything else to switch up your normal range day.
Will you ever need any of these skills? Likely not, unless you are involved in your local competitive shooting scene. However, it doesn’t hurt to build these skills and many can translate to self-defense situations. Plus, they can make your range day more exciting than shooting at the same paper targets.
Try Different Targets
Speaking of targets, if you’ve only ever shot at regulation paper targets, you’re missing out. There are so many options out there that take the range day experience up a notch.
Bring a metal target for a satisfying ping when you are on target. You can get a stationary one or one that swings from side to side when hit for more of a challenge. You can also try a self-healing target that bounces around when hit. Or just bring a few water bottles full of colored water and see if you can start at the top and go down, spilling more water with each successful hit.
