5 Core Exercises for More Stability and Strength

There are many different ways to exercise, and we all have different priorities when it comes to our physical fitness. But there’s one group of muscles at the center of it all: your core.

Having a strong core isn’t just essential for elevating your performance at your favorite Fairfield, Vallejo, or Vacaville fitness club. It’s also key to preventing injury, especially when it comes to repetitive motion or going for a new max weight.

Crunches are effective when it comes to building a good-looking six pack, but to target the deep core muscles that give you a strong foundation in everything you do, you need more than crunches.

For improved stability and strength, here’s a look at five core exercises you can try and how to perform them.

Elbow Planks

When it comes to your deep core, planks are arguably one of the most effective exercises. They require no equipment and are simple to perform, but that doesn’t mean they’re a walk in the park.

With your elbows and forearms on the floor and your upper arms vertical, hold yourself in a push-up position, with your toes pointed down and knees off the floor. Hold it for 10 seconds to start, then try to go longer as your strength increases.

Farmer’s Carry

The farmer’s carry is a similarly simple exercise, though it does require a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells. A medium weight is a good place to start, and you can adjust from there.

With an upright posture, hold the weights at your sides. Then, with a neutral spine, engage your core as you walk forward. Start with three or four sets of 30 seconds.

Pallof Press

The best way to do a Pallof press is by utilizing a cable machine at one of your favorite gyms in Fairfield, Concord, or Visalia. With a pulley grip attached and the machine at chest level, stand sideways to the cable.

From there, use your core to push the D-handle away from your chest, then pull it back toward you. Be sure to move with control, don’t rush, and avoid overcompensating.

Side Plank

If you thought the elbow plank was exciting, wait until you try out this variation. Start by laying on your side with your legs out and feet stacked, with your elbow directly beneath your shoulder.

Perform this exercise by engaging your core, pressing your elbow into the floor, and lifting your hips all the way off the floor. Repeat on your other side, and perform a few sets. Just like with elbow planks, start by holding it for just a few seconds, then work your way up from there.

Crunch Machines

As tempting as it may be, don’t build up momentum as you move the weight. You want to lift from a full stop with each repetition and work through the full range of motion.
