The gun range may seem like a place where you only need to bring your gun and a bit of ammo. However, there is plenty of other gear you might want to bring, especially if your local range doesn’t have a shop. You may even practice plinking at an outdoor range with little more than designated lanes to shoot in, so staying prepared with the right supplies is essential. What else might you need? From bringing shotgun cleaner, in case of malfunctions, to remembering to bring enough ammo, here are seven items you should bring along for a day at the range.
Breakdown Tools
One of the most important pieces of gear you can bring to the range is a set of breakdown tools for the type of firearm you are firing. Some guns may not require tools, while others might require proprietary tools. You never know when you will need to clear your weapon or if there is a malfunction that will require you to break down your firearm to clear it.
CLP – Cleaner, Lubricant, & Protectant
Gun cleaner CLP is another important item to bring with you for any trip to the range. If your gun is malfunctioning or just not running smoothly, you will want cleaner, lubricant, and protectant to get it back to top shape. Being able to unload, clean, and lubricate your gun means you can quickly get back to target practice rather than having to wait until you get home. It can also be the difference between a day of fun at the range and one that comes to a sudden stop.
Cleaning Kit
You will also want a cleaning kit with you in case you need it. Bring one for each type of gun you have at the range. If you have a pistol, for example, bring a pistol cleaning kit. While you are unlikely to need your kit, during an average range day, it’s better to have all of your cleaning tools and supplies with you and not need them than to suddenly need a cleaning rod and not have one. They can be useful if you get a round stuck in the barrel, for example.
Ammo
This may seem like a no-brainer but bring lots of ammo. Ammo sold at the range could be at a markup, and it’s entirely possible they are out of the caliber you need. This is especially true if you are using a less common round, such as .50 Beowulf. If you are visiting a range that doesn’t have a shop, it’s absolutely necessary to bring your own ammo. Plus, bring more than you might think. Depending on your gun of choice, it can be easy to run through all your rounds in a flash.
Targets
Bring your own targets. You might not want to use the targets the range offers, if they offer any at all. Always best to bring your own, instead. If you are going to an outdoor range, you might need to bring a stand to put the targets on, as well. This can be as simple as a PVC pipe stand you made yourself or a piece of gear you bought specifically to hold targets.
Ear and Eye Protection
Always bring ear and eye protection when firing guns. Even if you wear glasses, they are likely not rated for ballistics. You should also have ear protection, whether it’s ear plugs or electronic hearing protection. In fact, most gun ranges will not let you shoot unless you have approved eye and ear protection. By keeping your eyes and ears safe, you can enjoy many more trips to the range for years and years to come.
First Aid Kit
Accidents can happen, and you will want a first aid kit handy. Could be as simple as accidentally stapling a finger while putting up a target or using a shoulder brace to minimize the recoil you feel from your shotgun. No matter what first aid supplies you decide to bring, it’s another piece of gear you’ll be glad you have when you need it most.
