Distractions Are Addictions in Disguise
Our thoughts have an oddly appealing quality. Yet they rarely result in our happiness. In fact, studies demonstrate that being preoccupied with thoughts causes pain. When we are actively aware of our experience, we are lot happy.
In reality, the Buddha divided our scattered thoughts into five categories: yearning for pleasurable experiences, malice, worrying, avoiding situations, and doubting oneself. These "hindrances," as they are referred to, all lead to misery.
What Is So Appealing About Distractions?
One of the "cognitive distortions" (vipallasas) mentioned in early Buddhist teachings is the tendency to view sources of sorrow as sources of happiness. That's what's happening in this situation. The mind makes the following assumptions: if we wish for pleasure, it will come to us; if we despise what we dislike, it will disappear; if we worry about something, it will be resolved; if we avoid something we dislike, it will disappear; and if we doubt ourselves and become miserable, someone will appear and tell us everything is fine.
Therefore, we are sure that distraction is the key to enjoyment on a fundamental level. however, it isn't.
The Way To Happiness Is to Be Mindful Of Body And Mind
Happiness can be found in paying attention with awareness to the body's physical sensations, moods, and thoughts and how these interact with one another to enhance or diminish our happiness.
Peace comes from simply watching the breathing and other bodily sensations, calmly returning to it repeatedly when we become sidetracked. The foundation of meditation is this.
The body is where serenity is found. We discover contentment there.
How To Retrain The Mind With Practice
I, therefore, recommend the following as a practice.
Let the eyes first be gentle. Relax the muscles around your eyes. Let your eyes gently focus.
Then, start to connect with your body's sensations, seeing your breathing as gentle waves flowing through you.
See if you can imagine the body moving in one direction while the distracting thoughts are moving in another as you start to move away from the distractions.
Say something like this to yourself on each out-breath to remind you that your attention should be on your body's sensations:
This [the body] is where patience is found.This is where happiness is found.This is where peace is found.This is where joy is found.This is where ease is found.This is where calm is found.This is where security is found.This is where contentment is found.This is where confidence is found.This is where love is found.This is where awakening is found.Say one of the aforementioned lines or something similar as each breath moves down through your body. You're free to coin your own phrases. You can repeat phrases, but try to vary them a little so that the repetition doesn't become robotic.
How this works
You can simply allow different qualities to come to mind and remind yourself that they will arise through awareness of the body because, in essence, all positive traits are supported by mindfulness-based in the body.
Let the words go together with the breathing to further your goal of actively observing and appreciating your body.
The constant prodding to pay attention to your body will keep your mind focused in the near term. There is less chance for a distraction to appear and dominate your thoughts.
Long-term, you could start to understand that your body, not your distractions, is where you belong. It is the setting for growth. You should continue to focus your attention there. You want to be there. And your focus will inevitably move there.
