Conditions Post-COVID

COVID-19 is a virus that can cause long-term illness in some people. These are known as long COVID (post-COVID) conditions. In collaboration with CDC and other partners, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), created the working definition of post-COVID condition.

Post-COVID conditions are often called many things, including long COVID and long-haul COVID.

What you need to know

A wide variety of health issues can develop after COVID. These conditions can last for weeks, months, or even years.People with severe COVID-19 illnesses are more likely to experience post-COVID symptoms. However, anyone can develop post-COVID symptoms if they have been infected by the virus that causes COVID-19.If a person is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and becomes infected, they may be at greater risk of developing post-COVID symptoms than people who were vaccinated. Most people suffering from post-COVID symptoms have some evidence of infection. However, it is possible for someone with post-COVID conditions to not have tested positive or be aware that they are infected.CDC and its partners are trying to find out more about post-COVID conditions. This includes whether or not groups disproportionately impacted are at greater risk.

Concerning Long COVID and Post-COVID Conditions

After being infected by COVID-19, there are many new, returning or ongoing health conditions called post-COVID. COVID-19 infection usually resolves within one to two weeks. This is why it's important to wait at least four weeks before post-COVID conditions can be diagnosed. Post-COVID symptoms can be experienced by anyone who has been infected. Post-COVID symptoms can be experienced by most people within days of being diagnosed with COVID-19. However, some people who experience post-COVID symptoms later in life did not know they were infected.

It is not possible to determine if your symptoms are due to COVID-19. Post-COVID is not one condition. Your healthcare provider will consider a diagnosis for post-COVID disorders based on your medical history. This includes whether you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 by positive tests or symptoms or exposure.

Signs

Many symptoms may be experienced by people with long-term COVID or post-COVID conditions.

Some people may experience different effects from post-COVID. Post-COVID patients may have health problems that are different from others. Although most patients experience a gradual improvement in their symptoms, talking to your healthcare provider about any symptoms you may be experiencing after COVID can help identify other medical conditions. Some people may experience post-COVID symptoms that last for weeks, months, or even years. This can lead to disability.

Most people who have experienced post-COVID conditions report that they are:

It is difficult to understand and manage symptoms

Post-COVID symptoms can be difficult to diagnose or manage for some people.

Post-COVID patients may experience symptoms that are difficult to understand and manage. Routine blood tests, chest radiographs, and electrocardiogram results may all be normal. The symptoms are similar to those reported by people with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) and other poorly understood chronic illnesses that may occur after other infections. These symptoms can be difficult to diagnose and may require treatment.

These tips will help you prepare for your appointment with a healthcare provider for post-COVID conditions.

Conditions of health

After COVID-19, some people develop new health conditions.

Many people with severe COVID-19 experience multiorgan effects, or autoimmune conditions that can last for weeks, months, or even years. Multi-organ effects can affect many body systems including the heart, brain, lungs, kidneys, skin, and skin. People who have COVID-19 may have a higher risk of developing new conditions like diabetes, heart disease, blood clots, and neurological problems than those who don't have it.
