The Year 2022:“Himalayan Chef Grocery Shopping in Pakistan takes control of the Airlift after all its operations was ceased, sending shock waves across the entrepreneurial and the investment community in Pakistan.”

That’s all folks. After the successful 3 years of operations, Airlift Technologies announced its complete shutdown on 13 July. Airlift's collapse has raised questions about investors’ skepticism toward the global marketing capital. This lightning falls and rise of the Airlift was driven due to the rapid growth while some observers do blame it for their downfall.

“Noted among other Pakistani startups, this is not indicative of all businesses that have truly experienced development and expansion,” says Lakhani while highlighting the growth of the company.

In Pakistan, currently, start-up companies are suffering from the tremors of global recession, skyrocketing fuel prices, limited international investment, service rollbacks, and lay-off employees.

Well, when heard about Airlift, as a pioneer startup technology in Pakistan, it is one of the most established startups that achieved a milestone for the flourishing technology in today’s emerging market. Airlift Technologies was launched in 2019 and 1st operated like Uber-like services in Pakistan. Airlift is owned and operated independently by venture capitalists that do not have their distribution or manufacturing facilities but rely on different brands as a 3rd party. As the COVID pandemic hit the country, the transit services were scrapped and pivoted to the delivery of grocery and other household items quickly at your doorstep.

“Airlift raised a successful revenue of around $85 million in the 2019 financial year. The global market share decreased by 31% as well as pulling many markets of Pakistan, rethinking their strategy for the global recession,” says the Founder of Airlift, Usman Gul.

One of the largest funding rounds in 2021, Airlift had shown up as a success that ran even well in rough weather and grew well in a tough fundraising environment. It operated as a ‘Q-Commerce’service in 8 different cities in Pakistan including Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi. Bringing ease for the users by ordering groceries and other household items online and getting them delivered in 30 minutes.

“While this downturn in the capital markets and the global recession has exaggerated the economic activity of the country, leaving a devastating impact, and left the shut-down inevitable,” says Airlift Technologies in a Press Statement.

So, What Caused the Startup Scene, Airlift to the Downfall?

Other startups that have failed in the past often share some commonalities- they often over-estimated their capabilities, had unrealistic business models, or lacked a clear vision.Even though Airlift was a startup, it failed. The problem wasn't an anomaly, it was inevitable.

Fundraising was the main issue!

Fundraising was the main problem for Airlift's shutdown. The organization relied on donations to keep operations running, but without enough money, this forced the shutdown of the grocery and other household item deliveries

Operational Challenges pushed the firm to shut down!

Besides, fundraising an issue, operational issues pushed Airlift over the edge. Despite the scaling measures and the layoffs, the Airlift startup did not implement appropriate measures and continued to overlook the operational cores only. While the business was badly affected by COVID-19, the local transportation both private and the public was also affected as well

Global Recession in the country!

As the economic climate has declined, it has gone without saying that the strategic corporation Airlift hasn't fared well. It isn't surprising that the company attempted to ease financial hardships faced by companies through innovative business models. It was unable to do so, unfortunately; that proved its downfall

High Shipping Costis a problem!

Airlift's shipping rates and promotional offers were the biggest concerns. Airlift decreased its marketing budget and decided to solely rely on word of mouth to get the word out. However, this tactic has not achieved enough savings to offset the high shipping costs, dropping the customer base in favor of other transport and delivery businesses

Funding Crisis.

The financial crisis was a main issue in the Airlift Issues. This is because Airlift was struggling to pay its creditors, which caused a lot of problems for the company. Airlift had to declare bankruptcy in 2009, which led to big losses for its shareholders. Further, relying on international funds and not getting them on time leads to a downturn in the startup

Besides, the shutdown challenges cause a high unemployment rate!

Airlift has been in a state of failure ever since an unsuccessful attempt was made to resurrect the economic system of Pakistan. This has resulted in widespread unemployment and an impoverished economic climate for the country. This is a catastrophic blow to the economically disadvantaged in Pakistan
