I still remember the crisp morning air as we started our Short Poonhill Trek. The excitement of walking through terraced fields, rhododendron forests, and quaint villages made every step memorable. We were eager to reach Poonhill, a viewpoint that promises one of the most stunning sunrise panoramas in the Himalayas.
This trek may be short, but it is packed with natural beauty, cultural experiences, and breathtaking views. Even if you have only three to five days, the Poonhill Trek gives you a genuine Himalayan experience without the long journey that other treks demand.

The Trail and Terrain
The trek usually starts from Nayapul, a small town about 1.5 hours from Pokhara. From there, we followed trails that passed through lush forests, charming villages, and terraced farmlands. The path is well-marked and gradually ascends to Ghandruk, one of the most beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal, sitting at around 1,940 meters.
From Ghandruk, the trail continues through rhododendron forests, especially enchanting during spring when the flowers bloom in vibrant shades of pink and red. Finally, we reached Poonhill, at 3,210 meters, early in the morning to catch the sunrise. The view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges bathed in golden light was absolutely mesmerizing.
Highlights of the Poonhill Trek
Sunrise at Poonhill: The main attraction is the panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks. Watching the sun rise over Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Machapuchare is an unforgettable experience.
Cultural Experience: Along the trail, we stayed in traditional tea houses and met the local Gurung people. Their warmth and hospitality added a human touch to the journey.
Diverse Nature: From dense forests to open ridges, the trail offers a mix of flora and fauna. Monkeys, exotic birds, and even the occasional Himalayan hare made our hike more lively.
Trek Duration and Distance
The Short Poonhill Trek usually takes about 4–5 days, covering approximately 42 kilometers round trip. The daily walks are moderate, ranging from 4 to 7 hours, which makes it suitable for most trekkers with basic fitness. Even though it’s considered easy to moderate, the altitude gain to Poonhill can make your lungs feel adventurous.
Why This Trek is Special
What makes Poonhill unique is how it combines convenience with awe-inspiring beauty. You don’t have to trek for weeks to see Himalayan giants up close. The route is accessible, yet it still gives the feeling of a true mountain adventure. The journey through villages, along rivers, and through flower-filled forests makes the trek feel alive.
