A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, knife valve, or slide valve, is a linear motion manual valve with a vertical rectangular or circular disc that glides over an opening to stop the flow and acts as a "gate." A gate valve opens by lifting a barrier (gate) out of the flow of the fluid. Rather than regulating flow, a gate valve is used to stop liquids from flowing. 

A gate valve requires very little space along the pipe axis and barely resists the fluid flow when the gate is fully opened.  It is one of the most frequently used valves for water supply systems.

A gate valve is the most common type of valve that is suitable for both underground and above-ground installation. 

Applications of Gate Valves:

Gate valves are used to isolate specific areas of the water supply network during maintenance, repair works, and new installations, as well as to reroute water flow across the pipeline. Gate valves are mostly used with larger pipe diameters (greater than 2") because they are less complex to build than other types of large-size valves.Gate valves without an additional sealing ring on the gate are used where minor valve leakage isn't a problem, such as heating circuits or sewer pipes.Gate valves are typically used in on-off applications. They are best used in systems that require infrequent valve use. The valves are intended for full-area flow to reduce the pressure drop and allow the passage of a pipe-cleaning pig. Non-rising stem gate valves are common on ships, in underground applications, and in other applications where vertical space is limited.Gate valves are suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure applications. Power plants, water treatment, mining, and offshore applications are just a few examples.
