The newborn phase goes by too quickly. Soon, your baby is rolling, then sitting up, standing, and suddenly, a toddler is toddling around the room. Sometimes, those nights of waking up every two to three hours feel like a dream. Bedtime looks very different for parents of an older baby or toddler, especially if they’ve transitioned to a toddler bed. If you’re a new parent, you might think about adjustments and if the baby sleep monitor is still relevant, but try not to think too far ahead. There may be a lot of changes, but it won’t feel too different.
Early Days (Newborn to 3 Months)
Newborn “bedtime” is illusory. Newborns are still adjusting to changes in light and darkness and have no understanding of a “bedtime.” Nighttime is just a series of naps.
You can use an all-in-one monitor with a baby oxygen monitor to track sleep patterns and collect data. Information collected from a smart sensor and ankle band, like average heart rate, oxygen saturation, and typical external skin temperature, can help your baby get the best sleep. A smart monitor’s corresponding app may also offer relevant tips to help you at this time.
Older Baby (4 to 11 Months)
Your older baby probably has a bedtime routine: a final diaper change, pajamas, snuggles, songs, and a book. There may be some crying because older babies can experience separation anxiety, or they don’t want to miss anything. You could have also transitioned them to a crib, so there’s been lots of changes.
An older baby may have one wake-up or sleep through the night, and a baby monitor can be helpful at these times. A baby sleep monitor with a hub that includes a nightlight and plays soothing sounds could help keep them calm and lull them back to sleep. If the baby monitor includes a smart sensor that attaches to an ankle band, make sure it’s secure so that your little one doesn’t pull it off. Once they figure out how to remove it, you should stop using the smart sensor and ankle band, but you can still use the baby cam, hub, and app.
Toddler (12 to 36 Months)
With a toddler, you’ll feel like all your hard work developing a good bedtime routine has gone out the window. They’ve got a lot of new feelings they don’t understand, and they don’t want to stop playing, learning, and being with you so bedtime can be a challenge. Toddlers also have more control over their bodies; if they wake up at night, they can sit up, stand, and even leave their beds.
Stick to your routine, even if you have to add a stop at the toddler potty and 10 more books to the schedule. You can continue to play white noise or lullabies for your little one, and if they start to show a fear of the dark, you can leave a dim nightlight on as long as it doesn’t disrupt their sleep. A nightlight is also useful if a walking toddler leaves the bed at night so they don’t trip or fall in the bedroom. If your child is leaving their bed, make sure furniture is bolted to the wall and baby-proofing products are covering sharp corners.
Your baby’s sleep habits will change as they grow and develop, but a baby monitor can help take these changes in stride. You can continue to encourage and provide a comfortable sleep space for everyone in the family.
