Plates are used to put food on the table, but is that the only thing they are used for?
Imagine: someone randomly went- well this plate looks rather nice. I can obviously use it to decorate my wall instead of eating from them.

While that probably did not happen, plates do have a long history of being used, and not all of them was utilitarian. Plates have been used as commemorative items for a long time. They are made into beautiful showpieces only to be hung on the wall. You can also make decorative plates for engagement gifts and give them to your partner, family and friends!

And if you do not want to purchase one but still want to make a personalized decorative plate- you can. And here’s how.

There are many things you can use to make decorative plates- ceramic paint, sharpie and even nail polish.

But decorative plates are not meant to be eaten out of.

Using Paint

Whether you believe it or not- it’s true. There is a paint specifically for ceramic and you can use it to paint your decorative plate. Follow the below-mentioned steps to the T and voila! You can decorate away.

1. Wipe the plate using rubbing alcohol and clean it up. If you do not have that, you can also use a clean and dry cloth to ensure that there is no dirt or grease left behind.

2. The next step is to draw the pattern you wish to etch onto the plate. You can use a pencil to do so. If drawing freehand is difficult for you, you can use tracing paper or even a stencil.

3. After you have successfully drawn the pattern, use an outliner tube to make the same pattern. Allow the decorative plate to dry for an hour.

4. You can now use a palette of wonderful colors to paint the plate. Use as many coats as needed, and make your desired design.

5. Place the plate into an oven to bake it at 350-375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 177-190 degrees Celsius) for 35 minutes. Allow the oven and the plate to cool down before taking it out.

Tip

If you cannot find ceramic paints- you may use acrylic paints. They are toxic and must not be used if you want to serve food on the plate.

If you want to use the plate as a decorative item only- you can also use permanent markers or oil-based paint pens to make the decorative plate.

Using Nail-Polish

Marble art has become a trendy addition to all kinds of items- even cakes can be decorated using them. This art style is inspired by the beautiful patterns made using tie-and-dye. The best bit though- you can use nail polish to make marble art decorative plates. If you are extremely artistic- feel free to use nail polish to make patterns onto your plate as well.

Things you will need-Bowl full of water (glass bowls will be easier to clean)Nail PolishPlatePaintbrushHand towelsPlastic GlovesSkewersCotton padsQ-tipsModge Podge

1. Take a glass bowl full of water and place it on the hand towel to avoid making a mess at the workstation.

2. Slowly pour the nail polish into the bowl of water, till it disperses. You can use different colours and shades as well.

3. Use a skewer to spread the colour around the surface of the water and customize your art piece.

4. Put a plastic glove on to ensure that the nail polish does not cover your hand instead of the plate.

5. Ensure that the plate is clean and dry and gently dip it into the water. You can submerge the entire plate if you wish to cover it all with patterns. You can also just dip a bit of the plate to cover the desired part. Hold the plate in the water for a few seconds to ensure that the plate sticks to the plate properly.

6. Take the plate straight out of the water to make sure that the plate does not get an extra film of polish.

7. And voila! You have a painted decorative plate. To seal the colors in place, use modge podge and a paintbrush. Coat the plate in a smooth layer of the paste and let it dry for a few hours.

8. The best bit though- if you are unsatisfied with the design, all you need to do is skip the modge-podge. Take a nail polish remover soaked cotton pad and wipe down. One wash later- you’ve got a plate as clean as new.

Decorative plates add a beautiful touch to the room- whether it be a decorative plates with stand, or a decorative plates for display on a wall. But getting to make your own adds a personal touch to the decor item as well as your home’s interior design. But if making artistic things is not something that you’re into- you can just buy some cool decorative plates online.
