Mental health first aid is an important topic that is usually ignored. Similar to learning physical first aid to assist someone in an emergency, we should also learn how to support someone going through a mental health crisis.

Recognizing signs of distress is the first step in providing mental health first aid. Changes in behavior, mood, or thinking are examples of these. Someone who is normally outgoing and sociable, for example, may become withdrawn and detached. A normally calm person may become frustrated and worried. Because these changes can be subtle, it’s critical to pay attention to your loved ones and recognize the red flags.

It’s important to approach someone you know with compassion and understanding if you believe they are in distress. Asking them whether they are alright and if there is anything you can do to assist is a good place to start. Tell them you value and also that you are there for them. Listen actively and without discrimination.
