The Abhyanga massage has been quite important to the ayurvedic morning ritual for thousands of years. The immune system is boosted, the body and mind are purified and freed, and is the height of relaxation. Here's how you can include abhyanga into your morning routine and perform it at home. Make time for a comprehensive impact on your body and mind by setting aside a few minutes each morning.

What is an abhyanga massage?

Abhyanga massage or oil massage is a term from ancient Indian Sanskrit. Every morning, the entire body should be gently massaged with warm oil, as advised by Ayurveda. This massage is a great delight that you shouldn't miss out on. It benefits people who are stressed, anxious or have sleeping issues. The massage relaxes, calms, and cleanses the entire body and soul.

How to integrate abhyanga massage into your morning routine?

Depending on what is more comfortable for you, you can either stand or sit while giving yourself an abhyanga massage. Ideally, the massage should be performed on a large towel on the floor and the space should feel cosy.  Here are ways to perform a self-abhyanga massage:

Head

Start with your head when giving yourself the abhyanga massage. Apply the oil to the top of your head by dipping two fingers into it. Use circular strokes to lightly massage your scalp for 1-2 minutes when ready. More oil should be applied to your palms before using gentle circular motions to massage your face, cheeks, and ears. Beginning with the head, you should massage your entire body in circular motions.

Throat and neck

As you gently massage your neck after the head and face, add additional oil to your hands. Put both of your hands on your neck, move them to your throat, and then bring them back to your neck. Circularly move your hands while you breathe.

Chest and abdominal area

Next, pay attention to your abdomen and chest. The abhyanga oil massage should be performed with extra caution in this delicate area. Gently rotate your hands in a clockwise circle while massaging.

Back

After pouring more oil into your hand, try massaging your back as much as possible.

Arms, legs, hands, feet, and shoulders

Circularly massage the shoulder joints first, then the arms with lengthy strokes, the hands (circling the wrist and fingers), and finally the legs (in long strokes, circular motion around the joints). Finally, give your feet a thorough massage, paying specific attention to the soles and all joints, toes, and backs of the foot.

Post-massage

Give the body enough time to absorb the oil for a couple of minutes. After that, take a warm bath or shower. Lastly, remember that you don't have to completely forgo the advantages of a morning oil abhyanga massage in Sydney just because you do not have time. In this situation, just massage your feet soles, ears, and head for a few minutes.
