The driving test does not happen in Geurie. There is no Service NSW test centre in the village itself. Learners in Geurie sit their practical test at the Dubbo Service Centre at 258-260 Macquarie Street, Dubbo.
Step 1: Confirm You Meet the Eligibility Requirements
If you are under 25:
- Hold a current NSW learner licence for at least 10 months before you can book the HPT
- Complete 120 hours of supervised driving, including at least 20 hours of night driving
- Have your logbook filled in and ready to submit
If you are 25 or older:
- The 120-hour logbook requirement does not apply
- But you still need to hold a learner licence and pass the HPT before booking the practical test
Step 2: Build the Right Logbook Hours
Logging hours across different conditions is the whole point of the logbook. For Geurie learners, that means deliberately including:
- Open highway driving on the Mitchell Highway at or near the 90 km/h learner speed cap
- Night driving on unlit country roads, where wildlife is active, and road edges are hard to see
- Trips into Dubbo (around 30 km northwest by road) and Wellington (22 km southeast)
- Rain or poor-weather practice on rural roads with gravel shoulders
Step 3: Pass the Hazard Perception Test
The HPT shows you 15 short video clips of real traffic situations. You tap the screen to show when you would slow down, change your position, or prepare to stop.
The timing of when you tap is what gets scored, so responding too early or too late will cost you points. You need to respond the way a safe, experienced driver would in real traffic.
The HPT is scored out of 75, and you need to pass to progress. If you fail, you can rebook and sit it again, though a fee applies each time. Check the current rebooking terms on the Service NSW website.
Step 4: Know What Dubbo's Test Routes Involve
Your practical test runs for around 30 to 45 minutes from the Dubbo Service Centre on Macquarie Street. The examiner will take you through a route that covers multiple driving environments.
In Dubbo, expect to deal with:
- Multi-lane roads and traffic lights on Macquarie Street and Mitchell Highway through town
- Roundabouts, which are a standard part of test routes
- School zones with 40 km/h speed limits that apply at set hours
- Residential streets with parking and tight clearances
- Intersections requiring give-way decisions
Taking driving lessons in Geurie with an instructor familiar with both the local roads and the Dubbo test routes is the most efficient way to pass the HPT.
Step 5: Prepare Your Vehicle and Documents
Vehicle checklist:
- Current NSW registration and valid insurance
- Working indicators, brake lights, headlights, and reverse lights
- No cracks in the driver's line of sight on the windscreen
- Tyres with legal tread depth and no visible damage
- L plates displayed clearly on the front and rear exterior (not inside the windows)
- Seat belts working in all used seats
Documents to bring:
- Your current NSW learner licence card
- Completed logbook (if under 25)
- Your HPT pass confirmation
- Booking reference number
Step 6: Do a Warm-Up Drive Before Your Test
On the morning of your test, drive to Dubbo early and do a slow loop around the Service Centre and through some of the streets you expect to cover.
Set your mirrors in the test car before you pull away. Do your head checks on every lane change during the warm-up drive. On the Mitchell Highway approaching Dubbo, the limit drops from 100 km/h to 80 km/h and then to 60 km/h as you enter town.
