Although moving to Sydney is an exciting experience, there are a lot of things to consider, especially if you are moving internationally. We at Be.Accommodation want our residents to be fully equipped for their first year at university. Here are a few tips to get you started!
Make sure you have accommodation before you arrive
You can easily and quickly settle into Sydney if you find the right student accommodation. As you will be asked to fill in your intended residential address in Australia on your Australian Incoming Passenger Card, it is more than just having a place to stay when you arrive. Located close to some of the best universities in Sydney, Be.Accommodation is a safe and friendly place for students to live and learn.
Exchange cash
Having access to a bank card that can be used in Australia or having an exchange rate from your home country is important. For the first couple of weeks, bring $500 to $1000 in cash to get you through these things as they can take a while to set up and get settled. In addition to international transfers taking several business days, you can expect your Australian bank card to arrive in one to two weeks after you make the transfer. You will save time and stress by arranging this before arriving.
Dress appropriately
A variety of temperatures can be experienced in Sydney, from very cold winters to very hot summers. Be sure to pack cool summer clothes, such as t-shirts and shorts, and warm winter clothes, such as a warm jacket. Remember to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sun protection, as the sun in Sydney can be harsh.
Documents are important, so don't forget them
The offer from the university you plan to attend, the Certificate of Enrollment (CoE) and the VISA grant letter should be printed and brought with you when you arrive in Sydney. If you bring these documents with you, customs checks will be quicker and easier. Bringing printed copies of important documents will save you a lot of time if you need to do business, such as banking, in your first few days in Sydney.
Sydney has a lot to offer
It is time to explore Sydney after you have arrived and settled into your student accommodation. Sydney is home to many of Australia's most famous attractions, including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. In addition to world-class sporting events, New Year's Eve fireworks, and endless dining, the city offers an exciting non-stop calendar of events.
The easiest way to get around is by public transportation
Public transportation in Sydney includes trains, buses, ferries, and the light rail, and you will need an Opal card to use it – however, as a student, you can apply for a concession card that provides discounts. Opal cards can be used to travel to and from the Sydney region, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra, and Southern Highlands.
