HSRP Number Plate in India: Complete Guide, Latest Rules, Penalties & Easy Application Process

Applying for an HSRP number plate is now a mandatory process for every vehicle owner in India. Whether your vehicle is brand new or more than 15 years old, the Government of India requires you to upgrade to an HSRP plate. This blog explains the complete step-by-step process, along with important rules, regulations, and penalties to keep in mind.

What Is an HSRP?

An HSRP is a special number plate made of high-quality aluminium with advanced security features. It includes:

  • A non-removable snap lock
  • A laser-etched unique code
  • A hot-stamped chromium-based hologram
  • A standardized font and spacing pattern

These features make the plate tamper-proof and help law enforcement agencies track vehicles accurately. Unlike normal plates, no one can duplicate or replace an HSRP without authorization.

Why Is HSRP Mandatory in India?

The primary reason is to prevent vehicle thefts and misuse of fake number plates. With a secure tracking ID and a standardized design, police departments can easily identify and verify vehicles. HSRP also improves database accuracy for RTO offices and helps in digital challan issuance through ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras.

Four-wheelers must also install a colour-coded fuel sticker, indicating:

  • Blue – Petrol
  • Orange – Diesel
  • Green – CNG or Electric

This sticker is checked during pollution checks, traffic stops, and enforcement drives.

Penalties for Not Having an HSRP

Traffic departments have started strict enforcement. Driving without HSRP or colour-coded fuel sticker may result in:

🚫 Fine up to ₹5,000 for first offence

🚫 Fine up to ₹10,000 for repeat offence

Many cities, including Delhi-NCR, Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai, and Lucknow, have already begun issuing digital e-challans through CCTV cameras. Even if your vehicle is parked, ANPR cameras can detect non-compliant number plates and generate penalties automatically.

HSRP Rules & Regulations Every Vehicle Owner Must Follow

  1. Only authorized RTO-approved vendors can issue HSRP.
  2. Plates must be installed using approved snap-lock fasteners.
  3. Fonts, colours, and size cannot be modified.
  4. Tampering or painting the number plate is illegal.
  5. Stickers are mandatory for all four-wheelers.
  6. Old number plates must be replaced within the given deadline.

Failure to follow these rules may lead to legal consequences.

How to Get an HSRP Easily

Most vehicle brands provide online booking for HSRP installation. You can select your nearest dealership, pay online, and visit at your chosen time slot. The entire process is quick, transparent, and usually takes only a few minutes during installation.
