Journey to Dayara Bugyal, the College Reunion Trek with Himalayan Dream Treks

A spontaneous college reunion led us to the breathtaking Dayara Bugyal Trek in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Over four days, we wandered through dense forests, alpine meadows, and snow-dusted trails, revisiting old friendships, sharing laughter, and soaking in panoramic views of the Gangotri and Bandarpunch ranges. More than a trek, it was a journey of nostalgia, nature, and moments that reminded us what it feels like to be truly alive.

Some friendships are like old trails — familiar yet full of surprises. After years of city life, deadlines, and scattered careers, four of us decided it was time for a reunion. Not in a restaurant or a café, but somewhere that demanded more than just nostalgia. Somewhere alive. We searched for 3 to 4 day trek in Uttarakhand and found perfect- Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand.

It wasn’t a meticulously planned trip — more like a spontaneous idea over a WhatsApp group chat: “Guys, let’s escape. Let’s hike. Let’s meet the mountains instead of Zoom calls.”

By the following Friday, I found myself packing a backpack, tossing in extra socks (because I knew Prateek would forget his), and mentally preparing for four days of forest walks, alpine meadows, and long conversations I hadn’t had in years.

Reaching Raithal – Base Camp and Old Jokes

The bus from Dehradun was early, and the sun was still stretching its rays over the foothills. Our group, tired yet buzzing with energy, arrived in Raithal village, the starting point for the trek.

Raithal felt untouched, almost frozen in time. Wooden houses, narrow lanes, and small, earthy temples gave the village a warm, welcoming vibe. One of the homestay owners, an elderly man with a mischievous smile, asked, “Are you here for trekking or mischief?”

We laughed, remembering the countless pranks we pulled on each other during college. Even on the first day, our conversations strayed from work to random stories — like the time we sneaked into the library at midnight, or how everyone was still avoiding their “gym resolutions.”

The Trail Beckons

Next morning, backpacks on, we started the Dayara Bugyal trek. The trail wound gently through dense oak and rhododendron forests, with occasional maple trees peeking through. Birds chirped overhead — Himalayan monal, grey francolin, and treepie — while squirrels scurried across fallen leaves.

We stopped frequently, half because of the view, half because someone always “forgot” to check the trail. Aditya tried to name every flower he saw, often hilariously wrong. “That’s… uh… Himalayan rose?” he said, pointing at something that looked nothing like a rose. We laughed until our stomachs hurt.

The forest was peaceful, but our group added a human rhythm — laughter, teasing, old college chants. And somehow, it felt natural. The high-altitude meadows and snowy trails that awaited us wouldn’t mind.

Cultural Stops Along the Way

Before entering the vast meadows, we paused near Panchpura Bhagwati Temple and the Someshwar Devta Temple, both centuries old. The temples are small but full of local history. One villager explained the 500-year-old earthquake-resistant house nearby, its carved wooden beams still standing strong.

We noticed how life here is simple yet full — cows grazing in the pastures, villagers preparing for festivals, and children running freely through the lanes. It made our college chatter feel trivial, but in a good way — grounding.

Arrival at Gui Campsite

By late afternoon, we reached Gui campsite, near a small alpine lake. In winter, it freezes over, but in summer it reflected the sky perfectly. Tents went up quickly, and we gathered around a small fire as the sun began to paint the Garhwal Himalayas in golden light.

From here, we could see Mt. Bandarpunch, Black Peak, Srikanth, Draupadi Danda, and the Gangotri range. The breathtaking views made everyone quiet. Even our loudest friend, Prateek, simply stared in awe.

That night, we cooked a simple meal — dal, rice, and some vegetables — and talked until late. Topics ranged from office chaos to failed love stories, and even random thoughts like, “Imagine if someone turned these high-altitude meadows into a luxury resort?”

We laughed, but deep down, we were glad no one had.

The Morning Hike to Dayara Top

The next day, we woke to a clear sky. The trail rose above the tree line, opening to the vast expanse of Dayara Bugyal. Rolling meadows stretched as far as the eye could see, dotted with wildflowers and snow patches depending on the season.

We decided to climb up toward Dayara Top, the maximum altitude of around 12,000 feet, to soak in the panoramic view. The trek was easy to moderate, but the combination of laughter, occasional teasing, and stopping every few minutes for photos made it feel even longer.

At the summit, we spread out on the grass, letting the wind hit our faces. The mountains seemed endless. Peaks shimmered in the sun, shadows stretched over deep valleys, and the Gangotri range stood majestic in the distance. I couldn’t help but think — this is exactly what we needed: nature, silence, and each other.

Random Moments and Stories

Along the way, there were countless small adventures:

  • A sudden snow patch that made us slip and tumble — laughter echoed across the meadows.
  • A herd of local cows grazing, completely ignoring our group, teaching us humility.
  • Conversations about childhood ambitions, where everyone realized how little had changed about some of us.
  • Watching the sunset over the alpine meadows, knowing our photos could never capture the exact warmth of the moment.

I remember lying on the soft grass alone for a few minutes, just observing the butterflies, Himalayan hares, and distant monal hopping across the meadow. Even with friends around, there’s a special magic in moments of solitude.

Best Time to Visit Dayara Bugyal

  • Summer (April–June): Blooming meadows and greenery.
  • Winter (December–March): Snow-covered trails and serene high-altitude meadows.
  • Monsoon (July–August): Avoid heavy rains, but festivals like the Butter Festival make it culturally unique.
  • Autumn (September–November): Clear skies, crisp air, and stunning panoramic views.

Difficulty Level & Fitness Tips

Dayara Bugyal is graded Easy to Moderate, making it perfect for beginners, families, and those returning after a long break from trekking.

A little fitness goes a long way — short runs, daily walks, or light cardio can help, but laughter and good company are just as energizing. We joined one of India’s most reliable and trusted trekking companies, Himalayan Dream Treks (HDT), which made the trek smooth and hassle-free.

What to Pack

  • Trekking shoes, layered clothing, gloves, sunglasses
  • Water bottle and energy snacks
  • Headlamp and power bank
  • Camera — you’ll want to capture the meadows
  • Notebook for thoughts, because the mountains inspire writing

Precautions

  • Stick to established paths; the wildlife is far, but respect is key.
  • Hydrate and eat well, especially at high-altitude campsites.
  • Keep your phones and trash in check — the meadows thrive in simplicity.
  • Respect temples and the local culture — Dayara Bugyal isn’t just scenic, it’s sacred.

Additional Experiences

Raithal and Barsu, the base villages, offer rich cultural experiences. Villagers still maintain earthquake-resistant homes, celebrate Butter Festivals, and honor local deities. Spending a night in their company adds depth to the trek — a story within a story.

Nearby Siyari and Gidara Bugyal meadows offer further exploration if you have extra days. Each stretch reveals the immense scale of the region, the lush greenery, and the majestic Himalayan peaks in unique perspectives.

The Return Journey from Dayara Bugyal

Descending was quieter than our ascent. Conversations were fewer, but the occasional joke reminded us of old college days. On reaching Raithal, we shared a final cup of tea with the homestay owner.

“Did the mountains bring back your youth?” he asked, smiling.

I laughed, realizing he was right — even if just for a few days, the Dayara Bugyal trek had reminded us what it’s like to be young, carefree, and alive.

Reflections

This wasn’t just a trek; it was a college reunion in the Himalayas, a mix of nostalgia, random laughter, and shared awe. The high-altitude meadows, snowy trails, and scenic views were spectacular, but what made it unforgettable was the people, the stories, and the moments that didn’t need a camera to remember.

Dayara Bugyal isn’t just a destination — it’s an experience that teaches you to walk, laugh, breathe, and pause… all at once.
