In its opening scenes Kaapa Movie reveals some interesting possibilities. As a routine visit, a policeman enters the home of a young couple with ease and familiarity. Soon, he informs Anand (Asif Al) that Binu (Anna Ben), a policeman, is mistakenly the head of a dangerous gang due to her male-sounding family name and background. Her name is even included in the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA). This law, also known as the “goonda act” due to the colorful stories about her gang’s exploits that are published by a local newspaper, includes her name.

Kotta Madhu does not consider himself a hero. He is cunning, ruthless and merciless in many aspects. Kailas and G R Indu Gopan, whose Shamghumughi story is the source for the script, tried to show his soft side. He is just a man in his family, wife and son, and grieving past mistakes, but only selectively. Latheef, a local journalist, helps the opposing gang. The movie’s core is the conflict between the gangs.

Prithviraj portrays Kotta Madhu, a local gangster with class. Asif Ali’s portrayal of Anand, the determined, but sometimes naive, is another standout performance. Jagadeesh’s role as Jabbar is one to be remembered. Dileesh Pthan’s portrayal of Latheef was perfect. Aparna Balamurali, Kotta Madhu’s partner Prameela, also gave a great performance. Anna Ben was not given much screen time and it would have been better if she had been cast as Binu Trivikraman.
