Koi is a Japanese species of koi carp that comes in a variety of colors and sizes. The colors range from white, yellow, orange, red, blue, black and green. Koi can grow up to a meter long, but most stay at an average of 30 to 70 cm.
There are many different types of koi carp, varying in size, colour, pattern and scale pattern. The most well-known types are Tancho, Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, Utsurimono, Asagi, Shusui and Yamabuki. Each species has its own distinctive characteristics that set it apart from the rest, and collectors and breeders can identify them by their specific patterns and colors.

There are now many varieties of koi in domestic koi ponds.
We present the most popular Koi varieties here.

Japanese koi fish are a fascinating and diverse subject. Besides the classic orange fish with black spots, there are countless other colors and patterns found in this breed of fish.

Karashi

A koi that is dubbed as "mustard yellow". This Koi variety is available as Doits (koi without scales, possibly with individual lateral scale lines along the lateral line organ or also in the back area) and as Wagoi (koi with complete scales), also as a GINRIN variant.
Karashi are particularly noticeable due to their very large growth and trustworthiness.Chagoi

A koi that comes in different colors, from brown to yellow and also greenish, as well as a Chagoi ginrin variety. Mostly this Koi species is scaled, more rarely available than Doit's species.
This is a very tall species that almost always becomes tame. This Koi variety belongs in every pond as it brings calmness to the Koi pond.Showa
breeding form of the main group "Showa-Sanshoku" "Gosanke"
A three-colored Koi in the color mix black / white / red for which there are many different sub-varities. There are doits koi and scaled koi here too.
Of particular note is the Tancho Showa, a black and white koi with a circular red dot on its head.
A Showa usually has larger black spots, a lot of black coloring in the fins and always black on the head even with a tancho spot.Sanke
breed form of the main group "Gosanke"
A three-colored Koi in the color mix black / white / red in contrast to a Showa, a Sanke usually has no black on the head or only a minimal small touch of black.
The fins are streaked with thin black lines but never completely black. Here, too, there are Doitsu Koi and scaled variants.Kohaku
breeding form of the main group "Gosanke"

Kohaku also come in doit and scaled forms.Goshiki
The five colored koi, that's the translation. Goshiki are inconspicuous when young and often an “ugly duckling” that white is not white but dirty, but no wonder because the color white later mutates into grey/grey-black.
By breeding Asagi with the colorful Kohaku, this special variety of Koi is possible. Bright red paired with grey. In addition, the typical steps of a Kohaku. A black crescent moon is often found in the individual red scales.
The colors black, white, gray and blue with a red marking characterize a Goshiki.Asagi
Cultivated form of the main group "Asagi" "Shusui"
The Asagi has a greyish-white-blue net-like scale pattern directly on the back. This variety is only available as a scaled variety. The Asagi is one of the fastest Koi varieties and relatively shy.
This variety is also available as Hi-Asagi with a wonderful red/brownish marking. Also various sub-varieties like Yuki Asagi who has a special white.

Overall, there are endless color combinations in Japanese koi fish, depending on which species you prefer - whether light or dark, whether bright or subtle - everyone can find the perfect koi for themselves! Since there are so many varieties, it is not surprising that the variety of colors is remarkable. Each Koi is unique and brings joy and satisfaction to its owners - both at the sight and at the behavior in the water!
