South Korean jiu-jitsu athlete Koo Bon-cheol has won gold.
Koo defeated Abdullah Munfaredi (Bahrain) by advantage (4-1) in the men's 77 kg jiu-jitsu final at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games on Saturday at the Linfu Gymnasium in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.
Koo became the first South Korean man to win gold in jiu-jitsu at an Asian Games. Jiu-jitsu was first included as an official sport at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games, where South Korea won one gold and one bronze medal. The gold went to Sung Kira Sung in the women's 62kg category and the bronze to Hwang Myung-se in the men's 94kg category.
Koo earned a one-point advantage with 4:31 left in the match, and sealed the victory with a ground technique for a two-point advantage. Koo even got a nosebleed from his opponent's rough play with 4:08 left.
In jiu-jitsu, a point is awarded for submitting an opponent for three seconds with a precise move. If the move takes less than three seconds or is close to a point, the fighter is awarded an advantage based on the referee's judgment. Koo won this advantage instead of a point.
Koo remained calm in the face of Abdullah's fierce attacks and held on for the win. They exchanged one penalty with two and a half minutes to go, but it didn't affect his victory.
It was the first gold medal for Korean jiu-jitsu at the Games. Joo Sung-hyun won bronze in the men's 69-kilogram category on Friday, 바카라사이트 while Park Jung-hye won bronze in the women's 52-kilogram category on Saturday, beating teammate Lim Eon-joo.
Meanwhile, Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games gold medalist Sung Ki-ra will attempt to win her second straight women's 63kg title on Sunday.
