I'm not someone who plns treks months in advance. Usually it's a Thursday night decision and a Friday morning drive. Kudremukh was different — it needed actual planning. Here's what happened.
THE PERMIT PROBLEM
Kudremukh sits inside a national park. That means forest department permits, a mandatory registered guide, and strict entry timings. You cannot walk in without prior arrangement.I didn't know this on my first attempt. Drove 6 hours, got turned back at the gate. Wasted an entire weekend.
Second attempt — I did my homework properly. Looked up a good Kudremukh trek package that covered permits, guide booking, entry timings and stay options all in one place. That made all the difference.
THE TRAIL
Once inside the park — completely worth it.The grasslands around the 4km mark are unlike anything else in Karnataka. Rolling hills, clouds at eye level, no crowd. The horse-face peak shape is visible from multiple trail points.Total distance around 18-20km return. Start early, take it steady, carry enough water.
THE STAY
Small homestay in Kudremukh village. Simple food, basic room, early start next morning.
Exactly right for a trek stay.
BOTTOM LINE
Sort permits in advance. Leave Bangalore by 4 AM. Read up on entry rules before going.
The trail always rewards the preparation..
ONE MORE THING ABOUT THE DRIVE BACK
Nobody talks about this. After 18-20km of walking, the 6-hour drive back to Bangalore is brutal. We stopped twice — once for dinner near Chikmagalur and once just to stretch. Reached home past midnight.Plan for this. Keep Sunday free. Don't book anything Monday morning if you can help it. Kudremukh is a full weekend commitment — not just a day trip.
Worth every minute of it. Just go. You won't regret it.
