Problems Faced By Immigrants In The US

The United States is a haven for immigrants from all around the world. It is a land of opportunity that enables the masses from all walks of life to elevate their living standards. Statistically, nearly 26% of the U.S. population consists of immigrants.

Today, the U.S. has established itself as one of the fastest-growing technological nations. And a part of this would have been impossible without the generous contribution of the immigrants. If numbers are to be believed, almost 28 million immigrants add blood and sweat to the American GDP.

There’s not a single field where you wouldn’t find an immigrant contributing to the collective American dream. People from all backgrounds push themselves day and night to make an honest living in the States’ major cities. Immigrants are thriving everywhere, from taxi drivers to the CEOs of software giants.

But let’s take a look at the other side of the story. Despite the countless opportunities immigrants receive in America, there’s a void yet to be filled. Yes, it is indeed nothing less than a paradise for people who come to test their luck on American soil. But, it’s also a bitter reality that life isn’t a bed of roses for the considerable majority.

Some issues often find their place under the rug, concealed behind the glitter of ‘success.’ An American life might be a rewarding experience for many immigrants, but the path that leads them there is a dark dream.

This blog will discuss the most common problems faced by immigrants who move to the U.S. hoping for a better future.

Language Barriers

The United States receives thousands of immigrants everywhere through legal and illegal means. Most immigrants arrive from India, Turkey, China, and Iran. These are the countries where English is considered a secondary language. The lack of communication skills among the majority serves as the biggest constraint in their journey. It keeps them far from employment opportunities pushing them to settle for less lucrative jobs. It also affects their daily life as they struggle to communicate verbally with the residents.

Racism

Racism is one of the issues that has surrounded the United States for the longest time. Immigrants from India, Sudan, Turkey, and Mexico often face casual racism in public and work surroundings. Racial discrimination in America has existed in different forms. Sometimes, it can also result in physical violence and targeted attacks. This puts immigrants in a position where they can feel unsafe in certain situations.

Access To Health Facilities

Healthcare should be accessible to all. But that’s not the case for people in America. With U.S. residents struggling to seek adequate medical coverage, you can only imagine how complex things must be for immigrants. The recent policy changes have shattered the immigrant dream of coming under the healthcare umbrella. With inflation reaching a record high, healthcare access has become a blurry dream. This leaves the immigrants vulnerable in a place where they can do nothing but suffer.

Transportation Issues

It’s a fact that the United States is home to a wide network of subways and public transport. But, like everything else, it has some limitations. Immigrants that call the U.S. their home often struggle to find a place in the hustle and bustle of the megapolises. With economic and logistic hurdles in their way, they are forced to live in areas where there’s no direct access to public transport. This makes their everyday life nothing less than a challenge. Most immigrants are forced to look for far more expensive transportation, making it hard to meet ends.

Conclusion

Leading a prosperous life in the U.S. is a dream that every immigrant manifests at some point in their lives. But only a few can make it through. That said, America still enjoys the prestigious place of being an immigrant’s paradise. The opportunities that this land offers outweigh the challenges that come with it.

There are countless accounts that you can find about the experiences that occur in the life of an average American immigrant. One of the most moving accounts includes Birol Bahadir’s Between Two Worlds. It is a book that showcases a mix of struggles, triumphs, and prejudices that Birol Bahadir, a German-Turkish man, faced in the United States. The book provides a glimpse of Birol’s life as an immigrant and how he faced challenges in America.

It’s a perfect book for anyone who wants inspiration for living the American dream.
