Hair extension technology has advanced significantly. Now, with new materials and techniques, you can find alternatives that look and feel more natural than ever before. I suggest you give them another shot. One of your hair's greatest benefits is the option to wear a range of various styles without a lengthy commitment thanks to the versatility of extensions.

Renya Xydis, hairstylist, owner of the Valonz salon, and Cloud Nine Ambassador, and Tarryn Cherniayeff, Hair Director and co-founder of MOB HAIR, were interviewed to learn more about the many types of extensions, how to care for them, and how much they typically cost.

Hair Extensions, Part 1: The Varieties

Xydis claims that there are many different kinds of halo hair extensions, but that the most common ones are "clip-in, sew-in, micro-link, glue-in, and tape extensions."

Simply clipping them into your existing hair, "clip-in" hair extensions are the most convenient and gentle method of adding length, volume, and/or thickness to your hair. Xydis adds that the application process for sew-in extensions begins with the braiding of natural hair into a cornrow, followed by the sewing of the hair extensions into the cornrow. She also says that sew-in extensions are one of the most permanent and natural-looking options available.

The most destructive methods for hair are glue-in (in which extensions are attached to normal hair) and micro-link (in which extensions are looped around natural hair and clamped using a hot tool and metal rings). But if you take good care of them, you may use either one again," Xydis says.

Second / Choosing the Right Hair Extensions

Both Xydis and Cherniayeff recommend consulting with your stylist prior to purchasing and installing hair extensions. Choosing the wrong ones can have detrimental repercussions, so Cherniayeff recommends taking into account your lifestyle, budget, and natural hair to determine which will work best. "For example," she continued, "if you're a low-maintenance person and you're not prepared to set aside time to take care of your extensions, you may discover that you end up with matted roots and unmanageable hair."

3 / Can you get hair extensions with balayage?

If you've been putting off getting hair extensions because you feared they'd never blend in with your ombre or balayage hair, we have some excellent news for you.

The experts Cherniayeff and Xydis believe that even people with multicolored or multitone hair can discover extensions that blend in well. "Mixture of dark and light extensions, you're actually able to generate a balayage effect on its own," adds Cherniayeff.

Option 4: Artificial vs. Human Add-Ons

Human hair extensions are the greatest option, however synthetic ones (produced from a blend of synthetic fibers) can be attractive due to their lower price.

Synthetic extensions are often stiff and less natural looking than human hair. Human hair, on the other hand, may be easily blended with natural hair and coloured (where possible) to match natural hair, as Xydis explains.
