Imagine a world in which children's television of the early 1990s was taken by references to the state of ecstasy. The Adventures of Mandy and Molly is concluded with the main characters with bears wearing hooded tops singing and blowing whistles on a podium in the countryside of Hertfordshire. Scooby Snacks would be an appropriate reference for those shows that were truly bold. This was after all an occasional nickname for MDMA.

It is a great way to celebrate the 50th birthday of Scooby-Doo. The Hanna-Barbera TV show was designed to fill in a void after Action for Children's Television (ACT) is one of the endless busy-body groups that spewed filth on the telly and forced the cancellation of US TV of several cartoons that were deemed to be violent.
ACT did not mind a group of young strangers traveling across the country in a van that was brightly painted in the Altamont rock festival period.
Fred (cravat), Daphne (2-year-old damsel), and Velma (3-year-old intellectual with Agnes Varda’s hair) were all members of the outside layers of the counterculture. Scooby was a different type of character. Shaggy was voiced by DJ Casey Kasem, Shaggy spoke in the unmistakable voice of the dope addict man.
He spoke with a lobotomized voice that suggested he ought to stay away from the heavy machinery. Scooby, a Great Dane was hungry too. It's as if they were under the influence of something that the ignorant ACT would be happy to hear called "the munchies".
The subsequent associations that were created by stoned students were a source of puzzlement for all the creators.
My childhood American television was awash with a myriad of eerie references and allusions to the once-defunct counterculture. It was awash in psychedelia just like blotting out sheets covered in LSD.
Documentaries about this era explain how the rise of hippie culture led to the most severe of divisions between generations. Philip Roth's American Pastoral, a novel that examines this often tense gap, is an illustration. The children (I'm talking about the children, were enjoying the reflections, glowing smoky light at Haight-Ashbury.
The Banana Splits Movie, a streaming service that added the service in just two months and was well-received by their platforms. This hilarious horror-comedy revolves around a series with a similar name that was on from 1968 to 1970 and, elevated chemical surrealism to new heights.
Splits were a vile power-pop rock group comprised of four terrifying creatures. dimension: Fleegle. Bingo. Drooper. Snorky. These frightening creatures were not able to blast their theme tunes but could converse with a sentient cuckoo-clock or make snarky comments at a mole head that was stuffed.
Children's entertainment had touched on surrealism before, but the explosions, fluttering dissolves, and crash zooms indicated that we were in the neighboring territory to films that incorporated drugs, such as Roger Corman's The Trip. Everyone was involved in an inexplicably similar conversation.
The utterly bizarre HR Pufnstuf was, however, the series with the best and most memorable episodes of that era. I have friends who still shudder at the thought of an innocent boy gets lost and is found on an island inhabited by talking trees, Singing Frogs, and a talking fiddle, by the Krofft brothers. Although such stories are common in fairy tales, of course, HR Pufnstuf kept it grounded with acid penumbra.
The colors were depressing. The camera angles were a bit spooky. The puppets all seemed to be in the midst of a pharmaceutical breakdown. It was called HR Pufnstuf to be precise, to be honest. Puff-n-stuff? Get it?
Naturally, the artists expressed their dismay at the later associations that were drawn by stoned students' drawings. John Lennon claimed that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds wasn't referencing LSD and that it was drawn by his son, who was the Beatle's youngest.
This is real. Marty Krofft who co-created Pufnstuf claimed that the story did not revolve around drugs. "They may have lent them to the culture at that moment however, it wasn't our intention to assign the meaning." Scooby-Doo fans were equally shocked by the allegations.
Some of this made it across some of this made it to the Atlantic. Dylan, the Anglo-French rabbit from The Magic Roundabout was always unintentionally drunk of speech. Wanderly Wagon? Lord knows. But the more explicitly psychoactive stuff was generally an American phenomenon.
Although they insist they weren't trying to lure children into using hashish bars, it is important to acknowledge that the producers were not trying to do so. They could also have had a sense of a counterculture that had controversy and a bad reputation.
What is surprising now is that there was so little attention from conservative curtain-twitchers. We are wrong to assume the wisdom of the past when we re-evaluate popular entertainment.
A lot of writers recognized the issue in Friends 20 years ago, however, the changes in popular culture were, in the later 1960s, so jarring that it was difficult for gatekeepers to stay focused. Maybe the dog was just hungry. The Banana Splits might be normal aliens. It wasn't a matter. Watergate ended the unsettling, short-lived protest. It was a fun trip for a while.
