The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides a variety of home and living support options for people with disabilities that empower them to live with greater
independence, dignity, and quality of life. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a housing option funded by the NDIS to provide a secure and independent living environment for people with disabilities. SDA funding covers the cost of a specially designed home or building built with accessibility in mind. These homes will significantly improve participants’ functional capacity with higher support needs and make it easier for other disability support and services to be delivered smoothly.
The majority of participants do not require Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) as it is designed for individuals with exceptionally high support needs. To access Specialist Disability Accommodation funding in your NDIS plan, the participant will have to submit a report from an allied health professional substantiating your intense support requirement. The NDIS will also ask for reports detailing your daily support and housing needs before making a funding decision. They are also well within their rights to ask for more assessments if they need more information. SDA funding does not pay for the participant’s utility bills, rent, or other personal expenses. If are able to access SDA support in your NDIS plan, you can search for available vacancies using the SDA Finder tool given on the NDIS website.
