A cup of nice, aromatic coffee is what most of us dread for every morning to kickstart the day. While some of us have prepare our daily dose at home, others head to a barista. Although, the second option might look more appealing, it actually isn’t. You are not sure if the neighbourhood is serving freshly brewed coffee, what’s the quality of their coffee beans, or if this is the best coffee that you can get. With so many apprehensions, why not play it safe and make yourself a cup of coffee at home?

Let us help you brew that perfect cuppa coffee:

Experimenting with the types:

When you are brewing coffee at home, these are the common brewing methods:

• Pour over coffee

• French press

• Drip coffee machine

Tip: It is always better to weigh the ground coffee instead of using coffee scoops, measuring cups and measuring spoons. You can easily buy a digital scale from any online shopping UAE website or a website that’s popular and trustworthy in your area. It is recommended that you take 15 grams of ground coffee for 8-ounce cup of coffee.

Making Pour Over Coffee

• Fill cold water in a kettle and bring it to boil

• If you are using whole beans, grind them

• Put a filter in the brewer and rinse it with hot water to remove the papery residue on the filter. Since you will be pouring hot water, it will keep your coffee hot for longer time

• Add the grounded coffee into the filter

• When the water is hot, pour it on the coffee grounds to saturate them

• Stop pouring when you see that coffee has started dripping through the filter. This will allow the coffee to de-gas

• Pour the remaining water slowly, and this should ideally take 3 to 4 minutes

• Once done, remove the filter and enjoy your drink

Making Coffee Using a French Press

• Fill cold water in a kettle and bring it to boil

• If you are using whole beans, ground them to the consistency that’s similar to breadcrumbs

• Add grounded beans to the french press

• Add hot water to the french press, when it starts boiling. Make sure you are stirring the water into the grounds

• Keep it as it is for 4 minutes, and plunge the press slowly to separate grounds from coffee

• Enjoy your drink

Making Drip Coffee

A drip machine is your saviour on a hectic day. Plus, you can make more than one cup of coffee in less time

• If you are using ground beans, you have to grind them to the consistency of a regular table salt

• Put the grounds into a filter-lined filter basket and place it in the drip machine

• Turn around the water spout to the centre of the grounds

• Fill water into the back of the drip coffee machine and turn it on

• Coffee will brew automatically and you have to turn off the machine to avoid it from burning

Tips you might find handy

- Try buying fresh beans because coffee tastes the best when it is used shortly after being roasted. If possible, buy coffee from a local roaster so that you get the freshest beans. Do not buy coffee from supermarket because oxygen and bright lights can impact the flavour. If that’s unavoidable, look for coffee beans that come in vacuum-sealed bags. You can also try Nescafe 3 in 1, as the coffee has fantastic taste

- When you bring coffee beans home, keep them in an airtight container. If you do not have one, look for a ceramic or glass canning jar with rubber-gasket.

- Refrigerating coffee beans is a bad idea because coffee beans are porous and can absorb moisture along with other food odors. If you have dark roasts, never freeze them

- Try to ground the beans immediately before brewing because coffee loses quality after grinding. You can use an electric grinder to do the job

- Never settle for a cheap or low-quality filter because it impacts the taste of your brew a lot. Look for dioxin-free filters. If you do not mind investing, check out the gold-plated filters

- Do not overboil water because if the water is too hot, it can extract the compounds that are bitter. Boil the water fully for 45 seconds

- Avoid reheating coffee or keeping it on a warming platform for long because it will lose the taste

Coffee comes with a lot of health benefits, if taken in the right quantity. Even if you aren’t a coffee lover, preparing a hot cup while keeping the above-discussed pointers in mind can make you fall in love with the drink.
