The Cross Island Line will be the eighth line to be introduced into the MRT system. Designed to be a fully underground and automated high-capacity rapid transit line, it will be opening in three phases in 2030. It will enhance east-west travel from Changi to Jurong Industrial Estate. The eastern leg of the line will also extend outwards from Pasir Ris to Punggol. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) recently announced the alignment and station locations of the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2) from Bright Hill to Jurong Lake District. Read on to know the station locations of the CRL Phase 2.
Station Locations of the Cross Island Line Phase 2 (CRL2)
CRL2 will be approximately 15 kilometres and comprises six underground stations – Turf City, King Albert Park, Maju, Clementi, West Coast, and Jurong Lake District. Two of the stations will be interchanges, with King Albert Park linking to the Downtown Line and Clementi to the East-West Line.
The Environmental Impact Study for CRL2 has been completed and the reports are available for public feedback.
The construction for CRL2 is expected to start next year and the stations will open by 2032. It is expected to benefit 40,000 households living in those areas.
CRL2 will improve public transport accessibility for Singaporeans living in the West including areas such as Sunset Way and West Coast that are not currently served by an MRT line.
“By connecting key commuting corridors across Singapore, the Cross Island Line will help to redistribute passenger movement across rail lines, thereby improving the overall public transport experience,” said Transport Minister, Mr. S. Iswaran.
“For instance, a student travelling from Hougang to Ngee Ann Polytechnic will have their travel time reduced from 65 minutes to only 35 minutes with the CRL,” said LTA.
On the other hand, the Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 3 (TEL3) will open for passenger service on 13 November 2022. Commuters can preview and travel for free along the TEL3 stations during the TEL3 opening event on 11 November 2022 from 10 am to 9 pm.
SMRT Trains has been awarded the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) contract to operate and maintain the line in stages from 2019 for an initial nine-year period. TEL will add 43km and 32 new stations to the existing train network.
SMRT Chairman, Seah Moon Ming, said: “We are also working closely with LTA and system suppliers to prepare for a smooth opening of Stage 3 of the new Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL).”
SMRT focuses on sustainability in everything they do. SMRT Chairman further added: “The three stations from the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) Stage 1 have been certified as Water Efficient Buildings (WEB) since September 2021, while the six stations on TEL2 received their certification in March 2022. Work is underway for our bus depots to be certified as WEB by the end of FY2023.”
SMRT CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, said: “Our core values (R.I.S.E) define and motivate us: Respect for people and their professionalism; service with Integrity; Safety of our employees, commuters, and the community at the heart of our work; Service from our hearts; and the pursuit of Excellence to improve. We will continue to serve commuters in the best way possible as the new Thomson-East Coast stations open in November 2022.”
Conclusion
Now that the station locations are announced, it is expected that CRL2 will start work in 2023. Together with the 12 stations in CRL Phase 1 and four stations on CRL – Punggol Extension, CRL2 will provide alternative travel options for commuters and help to redistribute commuter load across the entire mass rapid transit network.
