For centuries, people have bought silver as a mark of prosperity in India. Every household owns a silver coin or silver jewellery. That is the importance it gets as a precious metal. But little do we know that its use extends beyond the jewellery industry. It is a strategic industrial metal used in various chemical processes. This makes it an integral component in different industrial particles. Another reason is its two contradictory traits.
First, it is a great conductor of electricity. Second, it is arc-resistant. Hence, it enables electricity to arc between open contacts. Its presence expands to photography, medicine, and chemical processes. You also find silver electrical contacts in thermostats, washing machines, stoves, heaters, circuit breakers, etc. They are also found in electrical switches, relays and breakers. Use such parts to extract silver with the following steps:
Find the components
Electrical contacts are typically located in connectors and device relays, including coil voltage. You should find such parts in your home appliances and electrical circuits. Once you have no use for them, open them and look for relays. They often get made with opaque black or translucent material with copper coating. Remove the bolt and screws that hold them and look for circuit channels.
Take out the contacts
After understanding the structure, spotting the rivets, assemblies, profiles, and wires becomes easy. You only need to separate them from the device. If they are sealed shut, use a hammer to open the containers. Remove the content and locate the contacts. They should look like tiny, circular metal beads on the end of metal panels. They usually come in pairs and face each other. If unsure, take them to an electrical contact manufacturer for verification.
Mix purifying solution
Now comes the extraction stage. For this, you need chemicals for testing and removal. The best reactant is hydrochloric acid. Dilute it with water till you get the required solution. You need to take cautious measures during this process as you deal with a corrosive chemical. Make sure to work in a highly ventilated area and wear protective gear.
Submerge contacts in them
After taking the safety measures, place the electrical contacts in the solution. This creates a reaction that leads to the breaking down of silver components. This dissolves other elements leaving the precious metal behind. You get to the reaction completion when you see no bubbles. The process takes anywhere between 12 hours to seven days, depending on the material quantity.
Add vinegar
After separation, you need to add four cups of vinegar to a separate beaker. Retrieve the purified silver from the hydrochloric solution and place it in the vinegar. This helps neutralise the acid and lets you get access to only the silver component. Submerge it for 10 minutes for getting this.
