Standard Maintenance for Ceiling Fans 

Before you do any kind of cleaning on the ceiling, you should always switch off the fan. Ensure that the blades cease turning entirely. Then, to clean a standard ceiling fan, do the following: Use a pole duster that glides over the fan blade to clean the top and bottom of each blade at the same time. Be careful not to bend or break the blades by applying too much force while you clean. Climb a stepladder and wipe down the blades with a damp microfiber towel for a more thorough cleaning. After removing the moisture, dry the area with a clean cloth. Remove grime from the motor housing and any pull chains using a clean cloth. After cleaning the blades, you may either run an unused dryer sheet over them all or use a microfiber cloth doused with an anti-static agent to repel dust. If you do this additional step, the dust is less likely to adhere to the blades, extending the time between cleanings. 

Want to avoid the usual dust deluge that results with cleaning the fan? Make use of the pillowcase trick! To clean the fan blades, simply wrap a clean pillowcase over them and slide it down the shaft. There will be no airborne dust particles to worry about if you use this method, as the dust will be trapped within the pillowcase. After dusting off the fan blades, simply take the pillowcase outside, flip it inside out, and shake the dust particles out before washing it. 

Cleaning an Oily Ceiling Fan 

Grease builds up quickly on a kitchen ceiling fan. Grease and dust can combine to form an adhesive-like residue on the blades, making cleanup a hassle. In a short amount of time, you can have your ceiling fan free of grease from the kitchen. 

First, use a dry paper towel to wipe down the blades to eliminate any dust or other particles. Then, wipe off the remaining filth and stickiness with a damp microfiber towel. Repeat the procedure several times on each blade if necessary to get rid of the oil accumulation. You can use a degreasing home cleanser on a microfiber cloth and scrub the blades if the muck is very stubborn to remove. Remove any remaining residue with a dry cloth and repeat until the blades no longer feel sticky. 

Ceiling Fan Maintenance: How to Reach Up and Down to Clean It 

To reach the ceiling fan in a room with particularly high ceilings, you'll need either a very long ladder or an extension duster. Make your own extension duster by taping the handles of a broom and mop together and attaching a duster to one end. Make careful to have someone stable the base of the ladder for you if you need to work at a high level. 

Assuming you have a ladder that will allow you to securely reach the fan with your hands, the pillowcase approach can also be used to clean very high ceiling fans.
