Most osteoporosis medications are designed to keep your bones as strong as possible. However, they all work in various ways:

Bisphosphonates, such as alendronate (Binosto, Fosamax), ibandronate acid (Boniva), and risedronic acid (Actonel, Atelva), prevent the body from breaking down bone and thereby cure osteoporosis. Boniva is taken once a month, whereas the others can be taken once a week. These drugs can cause esophageal ulcers if taken wrongly, therefore it's critical to follow the directions to the letter.
