Applying for APEGS professional engineering or geoscience licence requires you to demonstrate your work experience. However, you must remember not all types of work experience are acceptable. As a matter of fact, the authority accepts specific types of work experience. Therefore, knowing acceptable work experience types is a must for you.

Types of eligible work experience:
Post-bachelor’s experience:
Acceptable full-time engineering or geoscience experience on the basis of the number of months of experience is acceptable. If the experience was less than full-time, then you need to indicate the percentage in the Overview box.
You don’t need to subtract normal vacation and statutory holidays. However, lay-offs and leaves of absence are not counted towards the four years.
The time counted can’t exceed calendar time. Therefore, if you worked more than 40 hours in a week, you can’t count that as extra time worked.
Pre-graduation experience:
One year maximum can be counted. Experience must be from after half of the bachelor-level university program of study. This experience was completed and supervised by (or, close professional oversight by):
A professional engineer, geoscientist,
Engineering licensee (if the work experience was within their scope of practice), or
Geoscience licensee (if the experience was within their scope of practice
All these professionals must have registration anywhere in Canada or the USA.
Close professional oversight:
You should contact the APEGS to discuss situations in which your direct supervisor was not a professional:
Engineer,
Geoscientist or equivalent
However, you worked closely with a professional geoscientist, engineer, engineering licensee, or geoscience licensee. It is because it might be eligible to count towards the four years necessary.
If using pre-graduation experience in one of your competency examples, it must have close professional oversight for assessment. For example, the validator must be a professional engineer, geoscientist, or equivalent.
The professional who gave close professional oversight can be the validator upon the APEGS approval.
Completed thesis, on the basis of a master’s degree in engineering or geoscience (M.Sc. in some countries):
One year maximum can be counted. You must attack one-page thesis abstract and list of publications (if applicable) in the online system. At most, three years of work experience can be counted for international experience and graduate studies combined. For example, Canadian graduate studies don’t count as Canadian experience for the purposes of Canadian Environment Competencies (engineering). Or, the equivalent-to-Canadian experience (geoscience). A course on the basis of a Master’s (M.Eng. in some countries) is ineligible to be counted for the experience.
Completed Ph.D. in geoscience or engineering:
Two years of maximum can be counted if the Ph.D. program was entered directly after a bachelor’s program. Only one year can be counted when a master’s degree was completed. For example, the maximum allowable experience counted for all graduate studies is 2 years.
Attach the one-page thesis abstract and a list of publications in the online system.
At most, three-year experience is counted for international experience and graduate studies combined. For example, Canadian graduate studies don’t count as Canadian experience for the purposes or Canadian Environment Competencies (engineering). They don’t count as Canadian experience for the purposes of the Canadian Environment Competencies the equivalent-to-Canadian experience (geoscience).
Geoscience or engineering work when doing graduate studies:
Any geoscience, engineering, or Teaching Assistant/Research Assistant work not relevant to your graduate is eligible to count. Engineering or geoscience experience you earned with an employer outside the university setting is also eligible.
The number of months of experiences counted can’t exceed the actual calendar time. This work experience is entered as a separate employment period from your graduate degree. The authority will consider it separate even if the time periods may overlap.
International experience:
International experience needs to be valid in the same ways as the Canadian experience. However, you must remember that Canadian work experience is also necessary.
The teaching of engineering or geoscience:
Examples of this type of work experience are eligible for submission. You need to include the applicable content of what you taught to show competency. The engineering courses you taught must have engineering science or/and engineering design content. These two things must be as per the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board defined to be eligible. For a particular competency example, include the name of the course you taught. In addition, include details on the applicable part of the course fulfilling the competency. You also need to include how that content is applied in a real-world situation (the result).
Technologist experience prior to completing a bachelor’s degree:
One year maximum can count in exceptional cases. For example, if somebody has, at least, a technology-level education before going back to university for a bachelor-level engineering-geoscience degree. This experience must have been supervised by a professional:
Engineer,
Geoscientist,
Engineering licensee (if the experience was within their scope of practice), or
Geoscience licensee if the experience was within their scope of practice). Only then, this experience is considerable.
The twelve-month is reduced by the number of months of pre-graduation experience. This experience must count for a maximum total of 12 months for any experience earned before completing the university-level education. The education must be in engineering or geoscience that was the registration basis for engineering-in-training or geoscience-in-training.
Recent experience:
You need to have some recent work experience when applying for the APEGS professional registration. Here, recent means the experience you earned in the last two years before application. For instance, the end date on your most recent experience in the Employment History must be within 2 years. In fact, it must be 2 years old at the time of professional member application.
