Pregnancy is associated with many issues where orthopedic ones are common. It is very important to address these issues either before you plan a baby or during the early stages of pregnancy. It also won’t be wrong to say that orthopedic problems during pregnancy are common and if not addressed timely, severe complications may occur. In this post, we will discuss common orthopedic problems that are reported in pregnancy.

Orthopedic surgeries are avoided during pregnancy; if required, the doctor always waits until delivery. To get a CE-certified range of trauma implants, find experienced Orthopedic Device Companies near you.

Common Orthopedic Problems Seen in Pregnancy

Lower Back Pain

Back pain is common during pregnancy because of the fetus’s added weight and its uneven distribution throughout the body. This causes rapid muscle fatigue and that could lead to the development of muscle spasms. In some cases, the condition could become severe.

During pregnancy, it is difficult to treat back pain and the best way to avoid this is to have a strong back before pregnancy. Before planning to have a baby, it is necessary to consider the physiological changes that could occur during and after pregnancy. This will reduce the risk and severity of back problems during pregnancy.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Retention of fluids during pregnancy can make carpal tunnel syndrome worse. It is a condition that is characterized by the pinching of the median nerve in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness and tingling in the hands while affecting their ability to grip things. This condition often affects during the third trimester. Carpal tunnel syndrome may also become worse because of rapid weight gain.

Meralgia Paresthetica

Meralgia paresthetica is not a common condition but is seen during pregnancy. Being overweight during pregnancy is the cause of the condition. The cause of meralgia paresthetica is the compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. This nerve is responsible for supplying sensation to the upper leg.

As the baby grows, this causes pressure against the nerve. This results in numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the thigh. In the case of severe symptoms, cortisone injections are applied.

Reports have found that meralgia paresthetica generally resolves on its own after delivery.

Osteitis Pubis

This is an inflammatory condition that affects pubic symphysis, the bones at the front of the pelvis. The added weight and the position of the developing baby cause inflammation in these major bones of the pelvis. The ligaments in this area also get affected by hormonal changes that cause laxity in the ligaments to prepare the area for childbirth.

Plantar Fasciitis

This condition is characterized by inflammation in the fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toe. Stabbing pain is the commonest cause of plantar fasciitis and this could occur because of rapid weight gain during pregnancy. The pain associated with the condition is worse in the morning and the latter stages of pregnancy.
