CA glue or Cyanoacrylate Glue is also commonly known as Super Glue or Crazy Glue. The term is used to refer to a quick bonding glue. CA glue is used to bond any kind of material, such as – plastics, wood or metal etc. It is quite easy to use and preferred across various industries. This kind of glue is made from ethyl cyanoacrylate and similar types of esters.
How does CA glue work – Cyanoacrylate molecules start connecting with one another as soon as they come in close contact with water and then they quickly make chains to form a sturdy plastic mesh. The glue swiftly gets thick and forms a hard layer till the time that the molecular strands cannot move anymore. This commonly found glue is available in the market in three different viscosity – thin, medium or thick. While thinner glues set quite faster, thicker glues take longer compared to the former. However, the latter also exhibits better ability to fill gaps. How much water is enough – As mentioned earlier, super glue needs certain amount of water to start reacting and form a robust bond. Surprisingly, additional water is hardly required because the water present in the atmosphere is enough to start the bonding process. The chemical reaction between water and CA glue generates an intermediate ion that can naturally encourage it to react with other cyanoacrylate molecules. Gradually, a long chain of connected bonds lead to the formation of polymer. The mechanism of cyanoacrylate glue is quite different from others because in the latter, a bond is formed when the solvents which are carried in starts evaporating. Due to the bond with water, super glue is also considered toxic for human skin. Due to the moisture present in the skin, polymerization can easily start resulting in a disaster. Make sure to wear gloves while using super glue on any surface.
How far is the mechanical bonding effective – CA glue is highly effective because of the strength of mechanical binding it forms. The glue can easily get into the smallest of pores and get stuck there. Therefore, after it is solidified, it is also quite difficult to pull the glue apart. It has a transparent colour and does not leave behind any visible stains. Curing speed of CA glue is also quite fast. The best use of CA glue is to fill cracks, voids, inclusions or knots in wood. It also works perfectly well on metals.
The mechanism of CA glue is quite interesting and it is easy to use.
