Origins
It's not known where the original flag for America was created. It was designed by Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey congressman.William Driver was a Massachusetts sea captain who gave Old Glory to the flag measuring 10-by-17 feet. This nickname for Driver's flag is still used today for all American flags.It was destroyed several times during the Civil War. Before the Executive Order of 26 juin 1911, flag proportions were not set.
The Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777 stated: "Resolved that the flag of America be made thirteen stripes alternately red and white; that union be thirteen white stars each in a blue field representing an entirely new constellation. "The January 13th 1794 Act allowed for 15 stars and 15 stripes to be added to May 1795.The April 4, 1818 Act established that each state's flags should be decorated with 13 stripes and one Star on the 4th July after each state was admitted.The June 24, 1912 Executive Order of President Taft established the flag's proportions.
