When can I take the emergency contraceptive pill?

When it comes to emergency contraceptives (also known as the morning-after pill), best time to take the emergency contraceptive pill is within 72 hours, i.e. 3 days after having unprotected sex. When your regular method of birth control does not work, you can use this pill to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Taking the pill after three days of unprotected sex may not work. Even if the pill is taken on time, emergency contraceptives have a failure rate of 10-18%! You will still have a slight chance of getting pregnant after taking the pill within 72 hours. So, even if you take the pill within 72 hours you could still get pregnant.

It's important to note that occasionally, another dose may be required a few hours after the first - but if that's the case, it will be stated on the package. The majority of brands (almost all) do not require this, so just one dose is usually enough. If you take more than the recommended dose, you will not get any extra protection, and instead you will experience a big list of side effects. It is also important to remember that you must take the pill again if you vomit or have diarrhea within 3 hours of taking it. Please do not use the emergency contraceptive pill instead of more traditional and longer-term methods of contraception such as condoms, IUDs, birth control pills, etc.
