Why Does the Government Keep Halting Rail Electrification Schemes?

There has been a proposal in the UK to modernize the rail networks, but the scheme keeps receiving setbacks from the government. Every time the proposal is tabled before a committee, the government must come up with reasons that see the scheme being put off. Therefore, many people would wish to know why the government keeps stopping the program, yet some believe it can be beneficial. For instance, it is a zero-emissions locomotive that can help reduce pollution and help preserve the ozone layer. The following are some main reasons why the government keeps halting rail electrification schemes in the United Kingdom.

Power Supply Issues

There are a lot of trains operating on the UK rail network that operates on diesel. Diesel engines and the associated equipment face challenges of space and weight, which is a major limitation regarding the number of passengers they can carry. But replacing this with an electric train power will not help solve the solution as it comes with other challenges. For instance, the train that uses electric power will require a maximum current of 300A to be supplied by the overhead line passing through the moving pantograph.

Better Program

As much as the government had planned and budgeted for the rail electrification process and the planning had started, the transport secretary decided to announce the postponement of the project, stating that there was a new plan to introduce a faster train with more sitting capacity on board compared to the one they had in mind.

Higher Budget

Based on various news reports, it is right that the government keeps halting the electric rails scheme due to financial issues. Reports indicated that the UK’s spending watchdog believes that the claim made by the secretary that the scheme was unnecessary. On the other hand, the government believes there are alternative ways to improve the train transport system at a lower price. Initially, there were lines, for instance, the one from Cardiff to Swansea, that had been dropped due to a huge amount of spending on engineering work.

Alternative Program

The government plans to introduce a new bi-mode train technology that provides a seamless transfer from the usual diesel-powered engine to an electric one that passengers cannot detect. The new bi-mode train technology will operate without electrifying every line. This, in turn, will help reduce the budget as the government will only have to electrify lines of great significance to passengers.

Disruptive Electrification Works

The initial rail electrification schemes saw a lot of disruptive electrification works, which had a lot of negative impacts on the people. Therefore, the government, after due diligence, thought it was wise to put it to a halt and come up with modern bi-mode trains. The modern bi-mode trains would be beneficial according to the government. This is because there would not be a disruption in the former electrification works in the country and areas where the train would operate.

Even though there are various based on news reports after analyzing reports from the transport secretary, it is right to say that the main reason why the government keeps halting rail electrification schemes is because of financial issues. The argument can be associated with the watchdog’s report that stated that the cost of completing the projects had escalated.
