People working around ISO standards often use words such as auditor, consultant and certification body in the same conversation.
But these roles are not interchangeable.
That distinction becomes especially important when someone decides to move from employment into independent work or build a business around their ISO experience.
A consultant has a different job
An ISO consultant may help an organisation understand a standard, identify gaps and prepare its management system.
Their work can involve documentation, process improvement, employee awareness and helping the organisation understand what needs attention before certification.
That does not make the consultant the organisation that ultimately makes the certification decision.
Auditing is another path
Auditors focus on assessing evidence against defined requirements.
Some professionals build their careers around auditing because they enjoy the technical side of management systems rather than consultancy or business development.
The competence required can also depend on the standard and industry being assessed.
Then there is the certification body
The certification body has a different responsibility again.
This distinction matters for anyone thinking about building an ISO-related business.
You do not necessarily have to perform every role yourself.
Someone may be excellent at developing a market but not want to conduct audits. Another person may have years of audit experience but no interest in finding clients.
Understanding where you fit makes it much easier to choose the right path.
