Keeping the identity of a person hidden is becoming an issue of concern for Internet users. Online chats, emails, and other communication can be exposed to third parties, ruining careers, reputations, and relationships.

Anonymous social media platforms and apps offer a way for people to communicate without fear of privacy breaches. But there are also some risks that students should be aware of, such as cyberbullying.

Whisper

Whisper is an anonymous social media platform that allows users to post anything without having to reveal their identity. It was launched in 2012 and has 30 million monthly users.

The app has a reputation for being a place for teens to share intimate details without risking their identities. However, it can also attract predators.

A user can create a "Whisper" that consists of text on an image and can be posted anywhere, either publicly or in private messages. The Whisper can be customized by changing the font, selecting a background image and choosing to share it with certain groups.

Some teens have used Whisper to discuss issues of a mental nature, such as addiction or anxiety. The company also sets up support groups for those who have questions about their mental health and how to cope with it.

Secret

Secret is an anonymous social media platform where you can anonymously share personal thoughts and experiences with your friends. You can post images or text messages that have been hidden by the app's "secret" technology and have your friends interact with them by adding comments or likes.

The app is also available for iOS, and it recently introduced a feature that lets users disappear private messages when they leave their location. It's not the first app to do this -- Whisper and Yik Yak are two other examples.

While anonymous apps offer a safe space for sharing, they can also attract trolls and bullies. This can lead to damage in careers and personal relationships. As such, it's important to take precautions while using these platforms.

Reddit

Reddit is an anonymous social media platform that allows users to communicate about topics they are interested in without having to reveal personal information. It offers a safe space to share jokes, pictures from your life, problems and triumphs, and innermost desires.

It is broken up into a million communities called subreddits. Some are more broad such as r/nba and r/boardgames, while others can get very specific like r/birdswitharms.

Users post content and comments, then other users 'upvote' or 'downvote' them based on whether they liked the post or not. This helps filter out millions of posts and concentrate on what users actually want to see.

It is important to remember that although Reddit allows you to be anonymous, it is not always possible. You may not be able to avoid being identified if you share your email address with people. Alternatively, you can disable data collection by choosing "Anonymous Browsing" mode when you're on the site.

Confide

Confide is one of the best anonymous social media platforms that allows users to chat without worrying about what other people might think. Its messages disappear without a trace when you delete them or close the app.

Messages are encrypted end to end with locally generated encryption keys and Transport Layer Security, ensuring that only the intended recipient will be able to read them. They also self-destruct and are deleted from the server when they are read, preventing a man-in-the-middle attack or data tampering.

The app also comes with anti screenshot technology, preventing the other party from taking a picture of any part of your conversation. Your name will only be revealed if they do take a picture, and the rest of your message will still be private.
