The first time I went camping in Ladakh, it happened while camping at night, walking out of my tent and then stopping in awe of how many stars there were above my head – not from the cold but because the sky looked completely different to anything else I’ve ever seen in my life.
Now, before going on this trip, I had already assumed camping in Ladakh was only for tourists with a bit of extra cash or who opted to go camping as part of their leh ladakh tour packages. Yet, after having gone through this myself, I have found it’s perfectly possible to spend a night camping here without breaking the bank.

Pangong Lake: The Classic Starry Night Experience
Pangong Lake is the best place for camping in Ladakh.
It feels like time stops once you reach there in the evening. The whole scenery seems to be painted as the lake changes colors and the mountains reflect themselves in the water. With sunset, the temperature drops sharply, and the sky transforms itself into magic.
Pangong Lake provides camping services on a scheduled basis, where camps offer basic amenities. Some Leh Ladakh tours have a better accommodation option with premium tents; however, I preferred an economical camp which served me very well.
One thing I can recommend from my personal experience is to bring warm clothes because the weather can be very chilly, even in summers.
Nubra Valley: Camping Amid Sand Dunes
Nubra Valley camping is totally different from anything I’ve experienced before, as here there are not any lakes but sand dunes and mountain peaks together.
I camped in the area close to Hunder Village, where I had an opportunity to watch double humped camels throughout the day and admire the beauty of the clear sky lit by stars at night. This place is relatively relaxed as opposed to Pangong.
There are numerous tour packages available for the leh ladakh trip that include Nubra Valley camping, but you will be able to find cheap camps too.
Tso Moriri: The Hidden Gem
Tso Moriri will be perfect for people who wish to enjoy quiet and unconventional camping.
This was probably the most peaceful night of my entire vacation. With minimal tourism and an overwhelming sense of peace that is difficult to express in words, this lake provided me with unforgettable memories. Tso Moriri is an extraordinary site, especially when combined with the surrounding silence.
It was a far more natural and adventurous experience compared to what I had before. Although it can be part of premium leh ladakh tour packages, it is highly recommended that people make their own plans to visit.
Leh Campsites: Budget-Friendly & Comfortable
If you are not up for venturing into the wilderness, camping near Leh is a good choice.
I did my initial camping near Leh to get used to the conditions and realized that it was an excellent idea. It was a comfortable place to stay in, affordable, and an ideal way to experience camping without pushing yourself to extremes.
It is a perfect choice for novice campers or those who would like to experience camping without losing their comforts.
Things I Learned While Camping in Ladakh
Camping in Ladakh is magical, but it also comes with its own challenges. Here are a few things I learned from my experience:
- Acclimatization is important: Don’t jump straight into high-altitude camps. Give your body time to adjust.
- Pack smart: Warm clothes, a flashlight, power bank, and basic medicines are a must.
- Stay hydrated: The dry air can dehydrate you quickly.
- Respect nature: Avoid littering and keep the surroundings clean.

Budget Camping vs Luxury Camping
Prior to my journey, there was some confusion in my mind regarding budget camps and luxury camps. However, having visited both kinds of camps, it dawned on me that the natural beauty of Ladakh does not rely on the luxuriousness of the tent.
While budget camps provide basic necessities, luxury camps offer extra facilities and amenities. For those who prioritize experience over comfort (like me), budget camping will be sufficient.
However, for travelers who lack time or wish to enjoy convenience, some leh ladakh tour packages come with organized camping facilities.
The Real Magic of Camping in Ladakh
For me, the best part about camping wasn’t the location or the tent—it was the feeling.
Sitting outside under a sky full of stars, sharing stories with fellow travelers, and just being present in the moment—it’s something that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Ladakh has a way of making you slow down, reflect, and truly appreciate the beauty of nature. And camping lets you experience that in the purest way possible.
Final Thoughts: Sleep Under the Stars, Wake Up to Magic
In my opinion, the most important thing in camping was not where we were camping, nor what kind of tent we had used, but the feeling.
Sitting outdoors, enjoying the view of the stars above, telling stories with other tourists, and enjoying this moment—these are feelings that will never leave us even when the tour is over.
Ladakh is a place where you can relax, think deeply, and admire the beauty of nature. Camping allows one to experience all of this.
