India is a religious country. Hinduism is one of the most widely practiced religions in this country, which is home to many others. Due to their devotion to the adherents of this religion, Indian temples have long held a distinct place in the world. Temples in South India are well-known around the world.
India's "temple cities," as they are affectionately referred to, are renowned for their stunning architecture and profound religious beliefs. We recently had the good fortune to be on a South India Temple Tour, visiting some of the well-known temples in the South Indian temple cities. The tour, which was a combination of a road and rail trip, brought us through well-known towns including South India's 6-day schedule, which was centered on maintaining religion while also taking advantage of other attractions that each city had to offer. We will walk you through each place we visited while in South India and talk about the notable temples there that we saw as well as a couple that we didn't.
We'll also discuss the other legendary significance of several South Indian towns and the roles they performed, particularly in the Ramayana.
So let's start.
Chennai
Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu and one of the most significant cities in South India, is well renowned for its many temples. The city is a center for IT in the modern world and also contains lovely temples and museums. We began our adventure to South India from here, boarding a plane from Delhi to take us in about 2.5 hours to Chennai.
Government Meuseum Chennai
The Madras Museum is another name for this. This museum, which is in the Egmore neighborhood, is well known for its collection of artwork that includes historical and numismatic objects.
The Kapeeleshwarar Temple
The Kapeeleshwarar Temple came next. One of South India's most distinctive temples in terms of architecture is this one, which is noted for its Dravidian style. This Shiva temple is situated in Chennai's historic Mylapore district. The temple is well-known for the worship of Goddess Parvati, known as Karpagambal in Tamil.
The legend surrounding the temple dates back to the time of Lord Bramha and Lord Shiva when Shiva chopped off one of Bramha's heads because Bramha wasn't able to properly revere Shiva.
Then, to appease Lord Shiva, Bramha traveled to Mylapore and built the lingam there.
The temple, which is situated in the historic district of Chennai, is the ideal setting for street photography.
The evening just before sunset is one of the greatest times to visit the temple to fully appreciate its architecture and splendor.
Madurai
Meenakshi Amman Temple
The renowned Meenakshi Temple in Madurai must be your first stop while you are there. This was one of the largest temples on our South India Temple Tour, and it was also noted for its historical and religious significance. It was situated in the city's heart.
The temple is well-known around the world for its devotion to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in Hindu mythology. You can't help but be in awe of the people's inventiveness and skill when you see the building of this temple, which is beautiful.
The name of the temple, Meenakshi, which means "fish-eyed" in Sanskrit, comes from this place, which welcomes millions of pilgrims each year.
From all major cities, the temple is easily accessible by bus, rail, or flight.
Banana Market
The banana market in Madurai is yet another popular tourist destination. This market is well-liked by both locals and tourists and is well-known for the variety of bananas it sells.
Nearly 16 different varieties of bananas are hung and displayed at the stores in Madurai's banana market, which is adjacent to the city's vegetable market.
Quite the spot to drive you crazy!
St. Mary’s Cathedral
The next stop on the route was the St. Mary's Cathedral Church after the Banana Market.
This country's oldest Roman Catholic Church is located in Madurai. The interior and exterior architecture and design of this church are renowned. The church is exceptionally well-kept and is one of the top attractions in Madurai. The church's services are also quite well-attended.
However, whether it’s your first time or third time, you’ll still find plenty of the sort of tips or suggestions you may not think of to visit the above places.
