Mohammed and his family was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. ’We were stressed because we had no money to pay rent, the light bill, school fees and so many things,’’ says Mohammad.
To help communities during this difficult time, World Vision India provided cash transfers of Rs. 1000 for ration support and food baskets to the most vulnerable families so that children could get the nutrition they needed. Mohammad’s family received ration during the first and second wave of the pandemic. Children also received books and other materials to ease the burden of education on parents. ‘’As soon as the lockdown came into effect, we got ration support from World Vision. Additionally, since Mohammad was experienced in running businesses, he received a cash transfer of Rs. 5,000 to re-start his egg stall. He tells us, ‘’In July 2020, we got Rs.5,000 through World Vision. With that money we could get all the materials needed. We bought eggs, a large tava (frying pan) and a gas cylinder. Earlier I used a stove which ran on charcoal. So I had to keep fanning it while cooking. But the gas cylinder is better, and makes cooking faster,’’ says Mohammad with a smile.
Once the first lockdown got over, Mohammad re-started his business. Things slowly started to look up, for daily wage earners like himself, although gradually. When the second wave and another
